Woonsocket School presented a Veterans Day program last week, led by Mrs. Rosemarie Delvaux’s sixth grade class.
The program opened with Posting of the Colors by American Legion Post 29, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent Rod Weber welcomed the attendees and introduced 18 local veterans, who shared what branch they had served and any details they wanted to share from their experiences. The sixth grade class then thanked them individually and presented them with a flag pin.
Blake Howard read the 2016 Presidential Proclamation for Veterans Day.
The Woonsocket Band played the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” Members of the sixth grade class presented “Origin of Veterans Day” and a Veterans Day poem.
Students in grades K-5 sang a moving rendition of “Proud to Be An American” with sign language.
The sixth grade, led by their teacher, Rosemarie Delvaux, delivered various pieces and poetry explaining Veterans Day, and demonstrated the proper way to fold an American Flag while explaining the meaning of each fold. This was followed with an emotional singing of “American Tears” by the fifth and sixth grade classes.
Taps was played by Aaron Linke and Kaiden Schlenker, and the colors were retired by Legion members.
The program exemplified the respect the community has for those that serve, as it is a product of the entire school.  For a moment, the school gym was a stage to honor veterans in attendance and those in our hearts. It was a moving program for all involved. Veterans were touched by the respectful presentation of the students, and students had the opportunity to show their appreciation while gaining a better understanding of how local members of the community have served our country. Thank you to all that have served.
The school also wrote thank you’s to the veterans prior in the week.
