The CorTrust Bank ALM (Artesian, Letcher, Mt. Vernon) Community Foundation Board of Directors met recently to award its semi-annual grants.
The following distributions were approved: Town of Artesian for $500 for campground improvements, and the Town ‘N Kountry Kids Blue Group 4-H Club for $3,000 to be used towards pea rock and curbing edge around the new playground equipment behind the Letcher Community Center.
The CorTrust Bank ALM Community Foundation is an organization formed to attract and distribute gifts of capital for community betterment. It was initially funded by CorTrust Bank with a match from the South Dakota Community Foundation for the benefit of the Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon communities. The first grants were awarded in August 2000.

Gerald Edmund Bollinger

Sun Lakes, Ariz.

Gerald 33    Gerald E. Bollinger, 86, died Monday, March 20, 2017, in Sun Lakes, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Jerry, or G.E. to his friends and family, was born Dec. 25, 1930, and lived the majority of his life as a South Dakotan. During the first part of his life, he lived in eastern South Dakota, graduating from Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls in 1948. While attending the University of South Dakota, Jerry was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and a USD Stroller. He graduated from USD in 1952 and attended the School of Law. His law education was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., and later in Germany as a protocol officer.
His USD sweetheart, Mary Jean Dunn, flew to Germany, and she and Jerry were married in 1954. They both graduated from USD in 1956, and Jerry went to work as a lawyer in Jamison Law Offices in Woonsocket.
During his life in Woonsocket, Jerry maintained a private practice and was also Sanborn County State’s Attorney, Woonsocket School Board attorney, and had an insurance agency. He was a 50-year member of the SD Bar Association. For many years, Jerry was commander of the Woonsocket National Guard unit and was a member of St. Wilfrid Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Jerry raised his five children in Woonsocket, and all of them graduated from USD.
In 1981, Jerry sold his law practice and retired, allowing the couple to spend time at the family home in the Black Hills near Lead and the Sun Lakes, Ariz., retirement community. Jean passed away in 2008.
Jerry loved the opera and theater and was an avid hunter, golfer, card player and Phoenix Suns fan.
Jerry is survived by his children, Debra Bollinger of Virginia, Mark (Julie) of Florida, Scott (Deb) of Pierre, and Gregg (Joanne) of Missouri; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his wife, Rose.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jean; his daughter, Karen; and many of his extensive family.
Any memorials may be made to the William F. Bollinger Scholarship at the University of South Dakota Foundation or to St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket.

battleson-rev-dale 33    Rev. Dale Battleson, 78, of Mitchell, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 4, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Corsica, with burial following in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, rural Armour. Visitation, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, was Monday, April 3, at the church.
Rev. Dale Battleson was born April 24, 1938, to Leonard and Amanda (Estness) Battleson in Duluth, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Duluth.
He was united in marriage to Kay Reynolds on Jan. 23, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, Minn. Dale served his country as a reservist in the United States Coast Guard.
He attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Golden Valley, Minn., and was ordained in 1968. During his ministry, Dale served many parishes, as well as being a chaplain in several nursing homes. Communities he served include Bagley, Minn., Pukwana, Bradley Crocker, Rapid City, Roslyn, Moorestown, N.D., Woonsocket and Stickney.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Kay of Mitchell; two children, Lisa Renne of Rapid City, and Christopher (Krystal) Battleson of Carteret, N.C.; two grandchildren; and a sister, Geraldine (Larry) Sjoberg of Corrales, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bonnie.
Arrangements were with Koehn Brothers Funeral Home in Stickney.
