April 2018

With the completion of all the SDHSAA winter fine arts and athletic activities, the SDHSAA announces that 658 teams have received the “Academic Achievement Team Awards” for the 2017-2018 winter season. All varsity fine arts groups and athletic teams that achieve a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to receive the SDHSAA Academic Achievement Team Award.

The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket girls basketball team was included on the list.

Initiated during the 1996-97 school year, the SDHSAA Academic Achievement Team Award program is designed to recognize varsity athletic teams and fine arts groups for their academic excellence. The South Dakota High School Activities Association believes that high school students learn in two distinct ways; inside the classroom and outside the classroom – on the stage and/or athletic field.

This academic program creates a positive environment for school teams to have its members excel in the classroom. This program is also meant to motivate students toward academic excellence and to promote academic encouragement from teammates.

All varsity teams that participate in Association sponsored activities are eligible for this recognition program. The Academic Team Award program provides high school students with the opportunity to prove they can be overwhelmingly successful in both academics, as well as in athletic and fine arts activities.

Twenty-six candidates from three parishes received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, April 21, at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket. Bishop Paul Swain conferred the sacrament and celebrated Mass with the confirmands. Concelebrants were Fr. Jim Friedrich and Fr. Paul Nereparampil.

The Rite of Confirmation included the Presentation of the Candidates, Renewal of Baptismal Promises, Laying on of Hands and Anointing with Sacred Chrism.

The confirmation candidates from St. Charles Church in Artesian, St. Joseph Church in Wessington Springs, and St. Wilfrid Church completed a year of focused preparation for receiving the Sacrament. The past year included religion classes, community service projects, a Confirmation retreat and attendance at Mass.

Youth leaders for the year were St. Joseph – Amber Kolousek and Alicia Roesler, St. Charles – Mary Unterbrunner, and St. Wilfrid – Cindy Larson, Carrie Howard, John Ames, Gay Lynn Ames and Paula Linke.  All parishes received instruction from Fr. Jim.

Following the Confirmation Mass, family and friends celebrated with a reception meal in the church basement.

The Walking with the Savior children of Artesian First Lutheran Church collected money for God’s Global Barynard. With the money collected, the youth were able to order one pig, 10 chickens, two goats, one group of honey bees, one share of a cow, 1,000 water purification tablets, farm tools and training for one farmer, one month of food for an orphan, food for a refugee family for one week, three fruit tree seedlings, and five mosquito nets.

Also, with the earnings from their pizza sales, WWTS was able to donate $100 each to the Plus One Project, the Mitchell Area Safehouse and the Abbott House.
