At our last regular scheduled school board meeting, the Woonsocket board members approved to decrease the opt-out from $50,000 to $0 for taxes payable in the year 2021.

In 2018, the School Board approved a seven-year opt-out for up to $250,000. The opt-out allows the Woonsocket School District to collect up to $250,000 in additional taxes to cover any short fall of general fund operating expenses from year to year.  A short fall in funds usually happens because of a loss in state revenue, increased operating expenses, and declining enrollment.

In the past three years, the district has collected between $0 and $50,000 in opt-outs. The low amount taken recently is due to the school’s steady enrollment and cost efficiency within the budget. This includes sharing of staff, combining administrative duties, and other cost saving measures that have been implemented.

The school appreciates the community’s support and will continue to work hard to make our school even more successful for the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Supt. Rod Weber.

The Sanborn County Sheriff’s Department is still searching for Roxanne Johnson of rural Artesian. She was involved in a crime with three other people that took place in Artesian in June. The three others were Shannon Hanson of Plankinton, Aaron Stevens of Letcher and Steven Dirkes of Mitchell. The four of them broke into a man’s home in Artesian, assaulted him and held him there against his will, all with the intent of obtaining the man’s drugs. According to Sanborn County Deputy Sheriff Jason Coenen, there were no drugs on the premises that they found.

Johnson is the only person involved in the crimes that has not been captured and indicted. One of the others made a plea agreement and was released on bond. Two others were incarcerated and have since been released with electronic ankle monitors.

Johnson is wanted for second degree burglary and aiding and abetting second degree kidnapping. If anyone has information about her whereabouts, please contact the Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office at 796-4511.

Every year in September, members of the Jensen family participate in the Annual Memory Walk held in Sioux Falls in conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Month/Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the walk in Sioux Falls had to be cancelled, so the teams were challenged to gather and walk together on their own.

Michelle (Jensen) Stahl organizes a team every year in memory of her mother, Vicki Jensen, who passed away in 2016 from Lewy Body Dementia, which is a form of Alzheimer’s. This year, Stahl accepted the challenge of gathering her family members to walk on their own in memory of her mother and to show their support for finding treatments to fight the disease. So, on Sunday, Sept. 20, any family that could make it, came to Woonsocket and took a few laps around Lake Prior since the walk in Sioux Falls was cancelled.

According to Stahl, “I am so grateful for the wonderful family I have that continue to support me and fight against this horrible disease. Due to COVID and other events, not everyone was able to make it, but we still had a good turnout and a good time!”
