The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket junior high girls basketball team completed their season with a busy February schedule and a lot of success. 

On Feb. 1, the young Blackhawk girls traveled to Ethan to take on the Rustlers. The seventh-grade girls played first and won their game 35-14.

The eighth-grade girls team was up next against Ethan and also won their game with a score of 18-16.

On Feb. 5, the seventh-grade girls team traveled to Wolsey to take on the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds. They played well together and won with a final score SCW 26, WW 5.

On Feb. 8, the SCW eighth grade team played the Iroquois/Doland Chiefs at Woonsocket. The Blackhawk girls had a strong showing and defeated the Chiefs, 34-17.

For the final game of the season, the SCW junior high girls traveled to James Valley Christian in Huron. It was a hard-fought game, but JVC handed the SCW girls their only loss in February with a final score SCW 24 and JVC 25.

Evelyn Wormstadt, 98, of Huron, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2021, at the Firesteel Healthcare Community in Mitchell.

Her private family funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Iroquois. Burial to follow will be in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26, at the Kuhler Funeral Home with a prayer service and time of sharing at 6:30 p.m.

Evelyn was born Feb. 4, 1923, to John and Carolyn (Johnson) Freeburg near Carpenter in their home. Her siblings were Julia, Orville, Ida, Ted and Erma. Evelyn attended country school her elementary years and went to Huron and Doland her high school years. She graduated from Huron High School. After high school, she went to Northwest Business College in Huron for one year. After her schooling, she worked at the Traveler’s Insurance Company in Huron.

Evelyn married Eldro Wormstadt on March 15, 1945, in Huron, and they lived and farmed on the Wormstadt homestead farm north of Artesian until 1979. At that time, they retired and moved to Huron. They were blessed with two sons, Wenton and Lowell. Eldro passed away in March of 1980.

Evelyn was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Iroquois during her married years. After moving to Huron, she got involved in doing a lot of volunteer work at two of the elementary schools, the senior center and also the Huron Regional Medical Center. She received the honor of HRMC’s Volunteer of the Year in 2005. At that time, she had clocked 1,598 hours since 1987 when her volunteer activities began there. Evelyn loved the farm and her family.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her sons, Wenton (Jean) Wormstadt and Lowell (Judy) Wormstadt; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eldro; and all five of her siblings.

Mitchell

Margaret Marie Weiland, 88, of Mitchell, died on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021. 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation was one hour prior to the funeral. Burial was in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements were by Will Funeral Chapel.

Margaret Marie Weiland was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Sanborn County to Olaf and Lizzie (Jansen) Larson. She attended Christopher School in Elliott Township through eighth grade and graduated from Mount Vernon High School. Following graduation, she moved to Mitchell for work, meeting and marrying DeWayne Weiland in 1954.

While growing up and into adulthood, she enjoyed athletic activities including roller skating, ice skating, softball, and was an avid decades-long Mitchell Kernels basketball fan.  She was a member and officer of the VFW Auxiliary for 63 years.

Margaret enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, garage and auction sales, and was active in her church. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends of all generations.

Margaret is survived by three daughters; Diana Weiland of Mitchell, Connie Weiland (Kenneth Jones) of Laramie, Wyo., and Lisa (Roger) Riggs of Ethan; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Addie Weiland of Sequim, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, DeWayne; her parents; sister, Shirley Ruml; brother-in-law, Robert Ruml; nephews, Randy and Owen Ruml; and special cousin, Velores Youngstrom.
