Woonsocket

This year the Woonsocket City Council will be having an election for a representative from Ward 1. Incumbent Arin Boschee is being challenged by Lonnie Kuper and Elliott Ohlrogge. For Ward 2, the only person who took out a petition was incumbent John Baysinger, so he will keep his seat on the council. For Ward 3, Brandon Georgen was the only person who took out a petition to fill the position left open by Elliott Ohlrogge moving into Ward 1, so he will be taking over that seat. Finally, incumbent Dick Reider was the only person to take out a petition for the role of Woonsocket City Mayor, so he will be keeping that position on the council.

The Woonsocket School board will also be holding an election this year. Two people are running for each open seat on the school board. Incumbent Todd Olinger is being challenged by Mike Kogel for the open two-year seat on the board. Rikki Ohlrogge and James Grosz are running for the open three-year seat that was vacated by Jodi Doering as her term was finished.

Both elections will take place at the same time on Tuesday, April 12, at the Woonsocket Community Center.

Over the past couple of weeks, Feb. 7-17 to be exact, Bailey Feistner, served as a legislative page for the South Dakota State Senate. Her sponsor was State Senator Josh Klumb from Mitchell.

During her stay in Pierre, Feistner stayed with a host family that was arranged for her through the paging program. She stated that the host family will be having pages stay with them throughout the entire legislative session. Feistner noted that the host family had a lovely, welcoming home.

Feistner served with 11 other Senate pages, and 12 pages for the House of Representatives. When asked what she disliked about the job, she stated, “Sometimes we got sent to do the jobs nobody else wanted, which meant we were dealing with people who thought they were talking to the senators not just a page – definitely learned some people skills.”

However, in response to what she liked most, Feistner commented, “My favorite part was getting to know the senators and their own personal reasons for being there. I loved getting to understand the message behind each piece of legislature that was brought to the table.”

Feistner is a junior at Woonsocket High School and the daughter of Brian and Jennifer Feistner. She lives in Jerauld County which is part of the South Dakota Legislative District 20.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Woonsocket Community Theater performed this year’s selection “Murder is in the Heir.” The Woonsocket Community Club served a BBQ sandwich supper before Friday’s performance, and the youth group from Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church served ice cream during intermission of Sunday’s performance. Pictured above are Kathy Collins (Connie Feistner) and Lois VanZandt (Becky Potrament) as they discover the dead body of the murdered Simon Starkweather (Jim Feistner).
