During the weekend of April 19-20, sign hunters bagged a stop sign and Game, Fish & Parks signs at John Brown’s Mound north of Forestburg by the James River. We believe it took some real stealth to sneak up on the elusive signs before they ran away.
If anyone has any information regarding these skilled hunters, they are asked to call the Sanborn County Sheriff’s office at 796-4511.

On the morning of April 10 at 8:10 a.m., Brayden Peterson was driving a 2004 Buick Park Avenue east on old Highway 34. He reached for an item on the passenger seat and went into the ditch and hit a culvert then a power pole. Damage is estimated at $8,000.
On April 14 at 3:40 p.m., Jean McClane’s 2004 Buick LeSabre was backed into by a vehicle driven by Jhett Berg. Damage to McClane’s Buick is estimated at $4,000. Berg’s vehicle sustained an estimated $1,000 in damages.
April 14 at 9:05 p.m., Theresa Reynolds was driving a 2012 Ford Fiesta and smacked a deer. Damage is estimated at $4,000.00.
On April 16 about midnight, Joseph Allum crashed into a deer in his 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Damage is estimated at $1,500.

A SECTION of approximately a half mile including multiple tree belts burned in the early hours of Saturday morning. The fire was mostly kept from spreading too far east and west, but instead followed the Letcher oil road north and south. Four area departments assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

The dry spring has been keeping local volunteer firemen abnormally busy for the season. Woonsocket and other area departments have been called to four fires in the past two weeks and two over the Easter weekend. Friday afternoon, April 18 amidst 40-plus mile an hour winds, Woonsocket firemen were called out to the Mike Brosnan farm northwest of Woonsocket where a shelterbelt caught fire. The fire jumped nearly half a mile in the high winds, but was contained before causing damage to any structures. Very early Saturday morning, April 19 a fire ignited just south of Highway 34 on the west side of the Letcher oil road. The blaze engulfed a large area of pasture and tree belts, owned by Leon Fredrichs, but was contained before it could cross any roads or reach any structures. The Artesian, Letcher, Wessington Springs and Woonsocket fire departments, along with the SD Wheat Growers assisted in the fire. The two fires the week prior included an assist by the Woonsocket FD to a large Jerauld County grassfire north of Lane on land owned by Brandenburgs. The other was a grassfire northwest of Woonsocket on Davis land.
