JoAn Melchild

Ortonville, Minn.

 JoAn Elizabeth Melchild, age 83, of Ortonville, Minn., died Monday, July 15, 2013.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Mundwiler & Larson Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Artesian.
JoAn Elizabeth Dodd Melchild was born to Burton Moffat Dodd and Lela (Harrison) Dodd on Feb. 13, 1930 in Artesian. She graduated from Artesian High School in 1947 and went on to study at South Dakota State and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
She worked for many years as an editor, journalist and photographer for organizations including: “The Sun” newspaper in Minneapolis; The Green Giant Company; “The Homemaker” magazine; Cenex; and the “Cumberland Advocate” in Cumberland, Wis.
JoAn had a lifelong passion for art.  She traveled to attend art classes and loved to share her passion by teaching others.  She moved to Ortonville in 2001 and was involved in the Big Stone Arts Council.
She also loved doing genealogy research – even traveling to England several times to discover her roots.
JoAn is survived by her children, Ann Garcia, Tom Melchild and Janet Vance; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons; extended family and many lifelong friends.

    Terry Lee Miller, 65, of Lane,  died Friday evening, July 19, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, from pneumonia and leukemia.
Funeral services were held  Tuesday, July 23 at Basham Funeral Chapel, Wessington Springs, with Rev. Don Grubb officiating. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visit www.bashamfuneralservice.com.
Terry was born on Oct. 14, 1947 in Wessington Springs to Lee and Maxine (Bunde) Miller. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  He attended Lane school through the eighth grade.
He was a member of the Army National Guard Unit of Wessington Springs and was stationed at Fort Leonard, Mo.
Terry worked in Huron for Old Home Bread, Armours, and drove semi truck for Ron Beck, hauling concrete bunkers. He worked at Van Dykes and Van Lars in Woonsocket, at L.J. Repair, and for several farmers in the Lane area.  He was employed at LSI in Alpena at the time of his death.
His favorite pastime was working in his shop and rebuilding his Allis-Chambers tractors.  He was also building a house.
Terry is survived by his long-time friend, Elaine Schlenker of Lane; two sisters, Shirley Starr of Lane and Cindy Schuman and her husband, Craig, of Black Hawk; three nephews, Eric Miller, Blake Miller and special friend, Jen, of Mitchell and Derrick Schuman of Rapid City; one niece, Danette (Ted) Forbes of Black Hawk; four great-nieces, Jordan and Lexi Miller, Ashley and Amber Forbes; two great-nephews, Alex Forbes and Westin Kotrba; and other cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Charlotte Eileen Nelson, 86, of Huron and formerly of Forestburg, died Monday morning July 15, 2013 at Huron under hospice care.
Funeral services were Friday, July, 19 at the Basham Funeral Home, Woonsocket with Rev. Daniel Domke officiating. Burial was Eventide Cemetery.  Visitation was at the Basham Funeral Home, Thursday.
Charlotte Nelson was born on Aug. 29, 1926 at Ethan to A.W. and Nora (Richards) Baysinger. They lived in Platte then the family moved to Forestburg. She attended school in Forestburg and graduated from the eighth grade. After graduation she worked at Cliff’s Café in Forestburg. In her early 20s she went to work for Armour and Company.
She was married on Nov. 8, 1950 to Karis Sedgewick at Fort Lupton, Colo.  In 1954 she was married to Galen (Bud) Nelson at Roseburg, Ore.
She moved back to South Dakota in 1957 where she owned and operated a fruit market in Huron and later years in Forestburg. She retired in 2002.
She enjoyed watching golf and her favorite player was Phil Mickelson. She also enjoyed listening to the radio, especially Blake Shelton songs. She enjoyed her garden and canning her fruits and vegetables with her sister, working in her melon stand and most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, LaVonne (Morris) Brosnan of Black Hawk and Penny (Marlin) Magstadt of Mitchell; one son, Rick (Brenda) Nelson of Huron; two step-sons, Galen (Jan) Nelson and Gordon (Dee) Nelson both of Huron; one sister, Evelyn (Arvid) Olson of Sioux Falls; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, four brothers and four sisters-in-law.
