VERMILLION – University of South Dakota students receiving academic honors for the 2013 spring semester have been announced.
Included among those students were Tarkenton L. Kingsbury of Letcher, Luke A. Cumbee of Woonsocket and Kyle McLaughlin of Woonsocket.
Students achieving dean’s list honors total 1,641 full-time students while 459 part-time students have been cited with academic recognition honors.
Students earn dean’s list distinction by achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 while maintaining a course load of 12 or more credit hours with no incomplete or failing grades. Part-time students are eligible for academic recognition by completing at least 12 hours prior to the current semester earning a minimum of three and up to 11 credit hours during the term and achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 with no failing or incomplete grades.

Delores Mathis

Woonsocket

Delores Mathis, 83, of Woonsocket died Tuesday morning, June 4 at the Prairie View Care Center, Woonsocket.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 8 at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket with Fr. Jim Friedrich officiating. Burial was in St. Wilfrid Cemetery.  Visitation was Friday at the church with a scripture service.
Delores was born on March 25, 1930 to William and Ella (Garness) Ischen. She was raised on the family farm north of Artesian, where she spent many hours working alongside her father on the farm, loving the outdoors and animals. She attended school in Artesian, graduating high school in 1948.
On June 10, 1948, she was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) J. Grassel. They purchased a farm south of Woonsocket, where they began their farming career. Delores and Ted had five children: Cheryl, Victoria, Jacqueline, JoLynn (deceased) and James.
Delores married Norval (Shorty) Mathis on Nov. 20, 1965 and they continued their farming.
Her love of people kept her active as a member of St. Wilfrid Catholic Church, St. Wilfrid Altar Society, St. Matthews Circle, and a leader of the TL Rangers 4-H Club. She also was a board member of Sanborn County Extension and a 4-H judge for various counties during Achievement Days and the State Fair.
Sewing and ceramics were Delores’ passion and hobby.  She could be found working on some project for family and friends, whether it was prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses, Care Bears for  her grandchildren or the dozens of appliquéd dishtowels for her family.
She was employed at VanDyke’s Supply Co. in Woonsocket from 1990 to 2002, when she retired due to arthritis preventing her from working in the “eye room.”
She is survived by her husband, Norval (Shorty) Mathis of Woonsocket; her children, Cheryl (Bill) Ball of Douglasville, Ga., and Vicki (Richard) Miller, Jackie (Everett) Evers and Jim (Luci) Grassel all of Woonsocket; a son-in-law, Claude Forbes of Woonsocket; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred (Bob) Hendrix of Artesian, Joyce (Clell) Scott of Downey, Calif. and Donna Uhre of Rapid City; one brother, William (Sheryl) Ischen of Artesian; a brother-in-law, John Grassel; three sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Vetter, Raeburn Moore and Elinor Unterbrunner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ted Grassel; a daughter, Jody Forbes; a brother-in-law, Marvin Uhre; plus numerous Grassel and Mathis in-laws.

Cecil Cassens

Mitchell

Cecil Cassens, 95, Mitchell, died Saturday, June 8, 2013, in Firesteel Healthcare Center, Mitchell.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services in Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Cecil Sylvan Cassens was born Feb. 23, 1918 in southeastern South Dakota. He lived with his parents, Leonard and Ada Cassens, at Emery until the family moved to Forestburg when he was 18 years old.
He worked on the family farm and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. On July 15, 1946, he married Ethel Krantz at Luverne, Minn. They lived on the Cassens’ farm east of Forestburg for more than 50 years before moving into Mitchell.
Cecil enjoyed farming and was a good steward of the land he loved. He served on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee in Sanborn County for 20 years (1962-1982). He also served on the Forestburg School Board and the Union Township Board of Sanborn County for many years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Jackson-Hall Post 47 at Artesian. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visiting relatives in Sweden, Norway and Wales, as well as making winter visits to Texas and Arizona.
He is survived by a daughter, Helen (Ben) Zoss of Forestburg; a son, Kenneth Cassens of Edgemont; two sisters, Sharon Griffith and Nancy (George) Scheer; a brother, Jim Goetze; five grandchildren six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; and infant daughter, Lila Ann; a son,  Carlton; two  brothers, Dean Goetz and Gordon Goetze; and a sister, Yvonne Griffith
