Larry Sandness

Woonsocket

Larry J. Sandness, 63, of Woonsocket, died in his home, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.
His funeral was Monday morning in Basham Funeral Home at Woonsocket with the Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial was in St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery, Woonsocket.
Larry Joseph Sandness was born Sept. 25, 1949 at Mitchell to Elmer and Joyce (Heljeson) Sandness. He attended the Heljeson and Gettysburg grade school for four years and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1967, where he was the student manager and homecoming king. He worked for the Runestad Brothers and in the 1970s went to work for Parker Implement.
He married Jennie Meyer in 1973. She died in 1977. He continued with Parker Implement until its closing in 1984. He worked for Lincoln Auto in Huron several years, then started work for the Sanborn County Highway Department as a county supervisor until 1993. He was a general handyman in Woonsocket and a Woonsocket volunteer fireman. He enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a sister, Kay (Robert) Stange of Woonsocket; three brothers, Gary of Woonsocket, Mike of Letcher and Tim of Mitchell; many nieces and nephews and an aunt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one nephew.

Dorene Tollefson

Dorene Tollefson, 95, Mitchell, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, in Avera Brady Health and Rehab, Mitchell.
Funeral services were Thursday in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mitchell. Burial was in the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon.  Arrangements were under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
Edith Dorene Adams was born Oct. 21, 1917 at Newell, to Harry and Fern (Holden) Adams.
She attended schools at Vale and graduated from Vale High School.
She married Lyle Tollefson Nov. 20, 1935 at Belle Fourche. They farmed in Sanborn County and Hanson County, and then moved to Mount Vernon in 1950. She had been a resident of Mitchell since 2005.
She worked at the Mount Vernon School in the lunchroom and was a nurse’s aide in the Storla Sunset Home. She always had a large garden, loved flowers and taught her children to make bread and how to can. She also loved music and playing the piano. She was a wonderful mom.
She is survived by four sons, Darrell (Dee Dee) Tollefson, of Sioux Falls, Garry (Sally) Tollefson of Mount Vernon, Herbert Tollefson of Sioux Falls, formerly of Woonsocket, Eugene (Kathy) Tollefson of Parkston; two daughters, Gloria Ann (Mel) Tuffs of Mount Vernon, and Dorene (Richard) Polz of Jackson, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Tollefson of Mitchell; 35 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, in 2004; one son, Randall Tollefson; one daughter, Martha Hanson; a brother, Everett Adams; and a twin brother, Donald Adams; two grandsons, Herb Tollefson, Jr. and Michael Polz; one great-grandson, Jason Tollefson; one great-granddaughter, Stephanie Lyman; and a son-in-law, Jim Hanson.

VERMILLION – University of South Dakota students have been honored for their academic success during the 2012 fall semester. Students receiving academic honors for the 2012 fall semester include Lacey VanLaecken of Letcher and Kyle McLaughlin of Woonsocket. USD students achieving dean’s list honors this spring total 1,673 students while 402 part-time students have been cited with Academic Recognition honors. Students earn dean’s list distinction by achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 while maintaining a course load of 12 or more credit hours with no incomplete or failing grades. Part-time students are eligible for academic recognition by completing at least 12 hours prior to the current semester earning a minimum of three and up to 11 credit hours during the term and achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 with no failing or incomplete grades.
