Woony Foods, along with Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, hosted a ribbon cutting and official grand opening of the locally owned and recently remodeled grocery store located at 719 East 7th Street in Woonsocket.         City Officials and community members turned out in strong support along with the staff from both resident businesses for refreshments, drawings, food samples and even wine tasting to celebrate their reinvestment in the community.
This past June the grocery store closed, creating a hardship for many in the area due to the distance in commuting to a grocery store.  Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, housed in the facility since it was opened in 2004, purchased the building and Bruce and Kandy Schmiedt of Woonsocket acquired the grocery business.
“Our community had become very dependent on having a local grocer and we felt if we opened Woony Foods the community would support our efforts,” stated the new owners.  To date the Schmiedt’s assumptions appear to be true.
According to Woony Foods Manager, Jody Schmiedt, “traffic has increased consistently since we’ve opened and the wonderful comments we have received regarding our remodel have made all the work worthwhile.”
The Schmiedt Family and the Credit Union joined forces to make some much needed renovations to the property.  The shared improvements to the building and business included an upgrade to the lighting, repairs to the cooler system, maintenance to the building, expansions to the parking and new signage. Patrons will surely notice the wide aisles and bright lighting as they enter the store.  The home delivery service on Thursdays is also a welcomed addition to the customer-friendly features the grocery store has to offer.
As the current owner of the building, Dakotaland Federal Credit Union has taken a vested interest in the success of their tenant business.
“We are excited to open our facility to locally owned/operated business and are in hopes Woony Foods will grow and prosper here in Woonsocket.” commented Branch Manager, Lisa Snedeker.
The Credit Union intends to maintain their space within the grocery store and have expansion plans to accommodate additional services in the future.

Rachel Lucille (Eaton) Cyriacks, 30, of Woonsocket has reportedly been missing for more than a month, according to the  Sanborn County Sheriff’s office.
Cyriacks was last seen Nov. 11 working at a temp job at Performance Pet in Mitchell.
Sheriff Tom Fridley put out the alert about Cyriacks’ disappearance Monday after family members called the office concerned that they hadn’t recently heard from her. Family members said they had last spoke with Cyriacks Nov. 13.
Fridley says his office received new information Tuesday that indicated Cyriacks was last seen on Nov. 11 as opposed to the Dec. 6 date as originally reported.
Cyriacks’ last social media activity appears to be on Nov. 12 when she posted pictures on her Facebook page.
Cyriacks is 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds. She may be driving a silver 1995 Chevy pickup with the South Dakota license plate number 4CH-634.
If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact the Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office at (605)796-4511.

The ALM (Artesian, Letcher, Mt. Vernon) Community Foundation Board of Directors met recently to award its semi-annual grants.  The following distributions were approved: Artesian Volunteer Fire Department for $3,200 towards renovation of the restrooms at the Artesian Community Center, and the Forestburg Community Club for $750 for improvements at the Forestburg ballpark.
The ALM Community Foundation is an organization formed to attract and distribute gifts of capital for community betterment. It was initially funded by CorTrust Bank with a match from the South Dakota Community Foundation for the benefit of the Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon communities. The first grants were awarded in August 2000.
Grant applications are considered based on several factors, including the potential benefit of the proposed project to the particular population to be served and to the community as a whole.  The ALM Community Foundation has awarded just over $100,000 since its inception.
The ALM Community Foundation encourages and welcomes donations, memorial gifts, bequests and gifts of capital. The income generated from investment of these funds is then made available for grants. Donors may restrict their gifts to certain types of grants or to certain communities or they may designate them as unrestricted.
The ALM Community Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors that consists of people from the Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon communities, as well as CorTrust Bank. The current members of the Board of Directors are: Jeff Ebersdorfer of Artesian, Lori Kluth and Cheryl Hohbach of Mt. Vernon, Sherri Stekl and Janet Maeschen of Letcher, and Liz Hoffman, Barb Metzinger and Don Threadgold from CorTrust Bank.
The Board meets twice a year to review grant applications. The next grant application deadline is Feb. 15, 2014. Applications and more information can be obtained from the CorTrust Banks in Artesian, Letcher and Mt. Vernon.
