Modern Woodmen of America, represented by Stacey Malde, and the South Dakota Humanities Council provided area youth with a program to kick off the Summer Reading Program at the Woonsocket Community Library.
A noon lunch was enjoyed by the youth and adults in attendance. Helping with the event were Tina Luthi, Judy Brisbine, Pat Carsrud and Stacey Malde.
Jean Patrick, an author from Mitchell, captivated the children while dressed as a baseball player and telling the story about her book, “The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth”.
Members of the audience were invited to help act out this true story. The youth also enjoyed frosting and decorating sugar cookies to look like a baseball and then eating them.
About 75 children, young adults and adults are currently registered to participate in the reading program that runs until July 18. If you would like to join in the activity, visit the Woonsocket Community Library.

PIERRE – The South Dakota Department of Transportation would like to remind landowners of mowing regulations for the state rights-of-way.
Administrative Rule 70:04:06:06 states: No mowing of the right-of-way may begin in the west river counties of Gregory, Lyman or Tripp before June 15 and east of the Missouri River before July 10. All mowing by permit must be completed by Sept. 1 each year.
In accordance with the administrative rule, abutting landowners on state highways are given preference to mow right-of-way ditches. Other persons wishing to mow must obtain a waiver from the abutting landowner.
Any person wanting to mow Interstate right-of-way ditches must apply for a permit, with preference being given to abutting landowners. Other persons wishing to mow must also obtain a waiver from the abutting landowner. The permit application and waiver are available at: www.sddot.com/resources/forms/.
The department may mow medians and areas within the rights-of-way prior to June 15 to control noxious weeds and provide increased safety to the traveling public.
The application/permits needed for mowing the right-of-way for interstate, state-owned railroad right-of-way and the abutting landowner waiver are located on the DOT website at http://sddot.com/resources/forms/.

The 299 high school boys between their junior and senior years, who were delegates to the 74th Annual Session of the American Legion Boys State of South Dakota, May 30-June 2 at Northern State University in Aberdeen, held their general election for state officers on Thursday, June 2.
Aaron Linke of Woonsocket was selected as the 2016 recipient of the Samsung, American Legion Scholarship award. Aaron’s application has been forwarded to the National American Legion Selection Committee. The committee will award $20,000 scholarships to 10 state finalists.
