Balancing the team on her back, six-foot-two junior Myah Selland carried the Lady Blackhawks to their fourth State “B” berth in five years, easily taking down Castlewood, 64-40, in the Region 3B championship Friday night in Huron.
Selland scored 38 points in the win, just two points shy of her career-high set the previous game, and exactly the total Castlewood score at the time she left the floor.
To ensure a well-rounded performance, Selland put up her 10th double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Also helping out the Blackhawks was Abby Doering with seven points, Kayla Olson with six and Tayla Weber with four.
The Hawks shot 26-of-54 from the field for 48 percent, while the Warriors shot 15-of-52 for just 29 percent. SCW outrebounded Castlewood, 27-19, and committed just five turnovers.
The Warriors shot 15-of-40 from the floor and eight-of-17 from the line. They were led in scoring by Regan Benike with 14 points.
The win propels the Blackhawks into their fourth state tournament in five years. Tournament play begins Thursday night at the Huron Arena.

Myah Selland is setting the bar … and it’s incredibly high.
As a junior, the six-foot-two forward is about to play in her fourth State “B” Tournament, following a blue-chip season where she averaged 22 and a half points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Added to those regular season stats are 3.5 steals, 3.9 assists and 2.4 blocks per game.
In the Blackhawks’ three postseason games, Selland has improved on her per game average with a total of 97 points and 29 rebounds. She’s averaging 32.3 points per game in the postseason and 23.74 overall.
Heading into tournament play, Selland has a total of 546 points on the season, including 10 points-rebounds double-doubles.
Selland regularly puts up big numbers, but her coaches say she sometimes has to be encouraged to shoot it more. She is described by her coaches as very unselfish and loves to get her teammates, and her best friends, into the game. She makes her teammates better, they say.
Unsurprisingly, Selland has been garnering the attention of several Division 1 scouts, including both SDSU and USD, but has yet to make any decisions and is taking the time necessary to consider her options.
With another state tournament and a whole senior season to go, she has some time to think about it, and add to her already extraordinary career stats.
