Selland knocks down 40 in District 6B Championship win

Lady Hawks hope to punch ticket to State “B’s” Friday night

MYAH SELLAND

MYAH SELLAND

Local basketball sensation Myah Selland dished up a season high 40 points Thursday night, in a 62-42 win over James Valley Christian, to secure the Blackhawks their fifth consecutive District 6B Championship.
Selland’s heroics didn’t end there, as she recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. For good measure, she also grabbed four steals and had three assists.
Senior Tayla Weber also helped out the cause with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Maddie Vermeulen added on five points and four assists. Tristan Ziebart led in assists with six.
The Blackhawks racked up 28 total rebounds and 16 turnovers. JVC had 20 turnovers and was led by Khiree Held with 20 points.
The Lady Blackhawks have succeeded in bringing home the District title each of their five years since the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket coop began. The highly successfully coop has appeared in three consecutive state tournaments in 2012, 2013 and 2014, with fourth, fifth and second place finishes, respectively. The girls fell short in 2015 with a heartbreaking regional loss to DeSmet.
The Lady Blackhawks move on to the Region 3B Championship Friday, March 4, when they will battle Castlewood for a trip to the state tournament. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in the Huron Arena.
Castlewood is currently 17-3 and just knocked off No. 1 seeded DeSmet in the 5B title game last Saturday. The Blackhawks are 18-4 on the season.
