St. Wilfrid Catholic Church reached a major milestone this month, serving their first pancake breakfast in five years from the church basement. A Valentine pancake and sausage breakfast celebrated the completion of a five-year project to renovate the church basement.
In 2011, structural engineers determined that the basement footings, which support the main floor of the church, would need to be replaced. Temporary steel pillars were installed, and then the entire basement was gutted in order to replace the supporting pillars. The old asbestos floor tiles were removed and new cement flooring (with drain tiles) was poured. New handicap accessible bathrooms were installed, as well as a new ceiling, and four classrooms and a new kitchen area were completed. A few final touches are in process, but the church basement is once again fully functional.
The total cost of renovations was around $500,000, kept in check by the countless volunteer hours of many. Through generous contributions and fundraising efforts, the church has reached about $270,000 of a $400,000 goal. They look forward to many events to be celebrated in the St. Wilfrid Church Basement in the years ahead.
