The Sanborn Central School Board voted to approve a $600,000, 10-year opt-out to begin in 2018, at their Monday, May 8 regular board meeting.
A public informational meeting is planned for Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at the school to provide more information about the opt-out.
The new opt-out will replace the one currently in place, and the school board states that it will not increase taxes, as they plan to use money from the capital outlay fund to offset the increase. The current opt-out is in the amount of $250,000.
“The purpose of seeking [the opt-out] was always to make up for the lack of funding that is provided to our, and all, districts, from the state,” said Justin Siemsen, Sanborn Central Superintendent.
“It is nearly impossible for school districts to operate with state funds as part of the equation, because they are not guaranteed to be a certain amount,” he adds. “The funds being allocated to education on the state level are not nearly enough to adequately fund districts.”
The board would like all interested patrons to attend the informational meeting on May 18 to express any thoughts, ideas and concerns.
