Mitchell

Louis “Louie” Robert Podhradsky, 85, Mitchell, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.
Visitation was Sunday, March 2 at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Louie was born July 8, 1928 to Walter and Elsie (Shafranek) Podhradsky at Mitchell. He grew up and attended schools in Letcher. On August 21, 1950, he married Doris Tastad at Mitchell. He served in the Korean War while in the U.S. Army from 1950-1953. Since 1960 he owned and operated D & L Implement.
Louie was a member of the First United Methodist Church. For several years he was active in refugee resettlement in the Mitchell community. He also enjoyed playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughter, Debra Scott and husband, John of Mitchell; two sons, Robert and wife, Lori of Mitchell and Scott and wife, Anne-Marie of Wagner; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald, and wife, Joanie of Pierre; and sister-in-law, Ila Uptagraft and husband, Wayne of Rochester, Minn.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wallace; and one sister-in-law, Sharon Podhradsky.

Rhonda Baker

Alpena

Rhonda Baker, 54, of Alpena, died Sunday, March 2, 2014 at her home in Alpena.
Her body has been cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
Rhonda Kay Moeding was born to Richard Moeding and Marilyn (Waldner) Shoultz on Nov. 2, 1959 in Huron. She attended Davenport Central High School.
She was employed by Rudy’s Tacos for 23 years and Jack Links LLC for 10 years.
She married Robert (Bob) Baker on April 29, 1978 in Davenport, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Bob of Alpena; daughter, Jennifer (Kenneth) Sederstrom of Huron; sons, Robert Baker, Jr. of Huron and Jason (Nellie) Baker of Forestburg; six grandchildren; her mother, Marilyn Shoultz; and brothers, David Moeding, Rodney Moeding and Jeff Shoultz of Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Moeding; step-father, Gary Shoultz, Sr.; one brother, Gary Shoultz, Jr.; and granddaughter, Grace Cristine Baker.

Roberta Van Bockel    Roberta Van Bockel, 85, of Miller and formerly of Wessington Springs, died Friday evening, Feb. 28, 2014 at the nursing home in Miller.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs with Rev. Sara Olson Dean officiating. Burial was in the Hope Cemetery. Visitation was at the Basham Funeral Home Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Roberta Jane was born to Alva and Alice (Lehner) Blacksten on Sept. 20, 1928 in Mitchell. She attended grade school and high school in Mitchell. After graduation she worked at a local bank in Mitchell.
She married Francis “Van” Van Bockel on March 5, 1955 at her parent’s home of rural Mitchell. They started their married life together in Miller,  and then moved to St. Lawerence and then to a ranch southwest of Wessington Springs.
Roberta and Van raised their four daughters and ranched together until moving to Wessington Springs. She later moved to Miller to an assisted living facility and then to the Good Samaritan Society.
She was a member of the Templeton United Methodist Church of rural Wessington Springs.
Roberta is survived by her daughters, LeAnn (Marvin) Gjernes, Chelsea, Jan (Brian) Winter, Wessington, Cindy (Hugh) LeRoy, Frenchtown, Mont., and Jodi (Paul) Weber of Woonsocket; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandsons and three great-grandaughters; a brother, DeWayne (Marlys) Blacksten of Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband; her parents; two sisters, Lola and June; a brother, Bob; and a brother and sister who died in infancy.
