Around the County

Feeding South Dakota and the Sanborn County Food Pantry want to inform Sanborn County residents that the next Food Giveaway will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m. (until food is gone).

The Food Giveaway provides free food to families in need. The free food includes assorted frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and assorted canned and boxed items.

Boxes for food will be available, but recipients are encouraged to bring their own. There is no entry to the Food Giveaway before 4:45 p.m. Participants are asked to call ahead at 796-4516 or 796-4513 if the weather is unfavorable.

December is also the time for the Christmas Box Giveaway. The list of those to receive Christmas boxes comes from various sources in the community or if a resident has requested a box at the courthouse prior during the year. Names are kept confidential. The Christmas box deliveries will be made on Dec. 19.

As a reminder, due to the timing of the holidays and the Christmas box giveaway just a few days prior to Christmas day, there is no Food Giveaway in January. Anyone can go to the Sanborn County courthouse for a box in January or anytime they have a need.

Feeding South Dakota is a statewide organization with locations in Pierre, Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Their mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota. For more information or to make a donation to support food giveaways, please visit feedingsouthdakota.org.

The Woonsocket Community Club will once again be sponsoring the Christmas Caring Tree for Sanborn County area children. It will once again be located in the lobby of the First National Bank at Woonsocket.

Families who would like their children to participate may pick up an application at the bank or call 796-4422.  Confidentiality will be enforced, and all participants will remain anonymous.

Individuals wishing to support the Caring Tree may pick up a name off the Caring Tree after Friday, Nov. 30, or make a monetary donation at the bank.

The new application date, for children’s names to be accepted, is Nov. 30.

The Sanborn County Extension Office is very excited to announce that they will be hosting a trapping workshop in Sanborn County. Darold Bitterman of Mitchell will be here to present trapping and skinning techniques.  This opportunity is open to all interested adults and kids.

To better accommodate people, the event will be held on two dates:  Sunday, Dec. 2, and Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1-4 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Forestburg. The same information will be offered on both days, so individuals will only need to attend one session.

To reserve a spot, please call or email the Extension Office at (605)796-4380 or sanborn.county@sdstate.edu, by Monday, Nov. 19. The cost to attend is $5.
