Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for students in grades 3-12, including students with special needs. Grade levels are divided into six classes. One award in each of the six classes will be presented in each division. Winners of the National American Legion Auxiliary contest will receive $50 and a $50 donation in the student’s name will be made to the Children of Warriors National Presidents’ Scholarship fund. National winners will be posted at www.ALAforVeterans.org after convention. The Americanism essay title for 2018 is “What can I personally do to promote Americanism in my school or community.”

The Artesian American Legion Auxiliary selected the Americanism poem and essay winners.  The first place winners are forwarded to the District 6 American Legion Auxiliary officers to be judged, and the first place winner is sent to the State American Legion Auxiliary Americanism officers.  The state first place winners are forwarded to the National American Legion Auxiliary headquarters for judging.

Artesian First Lutheran and area women met at the church on Thursday evening, March 1, for Bible study and quilting.   A short business meeting was held at 6:30 p.m., followed by Bible study at 7 p.m. Those in attendance were: Judi Larson, Gwen Effling, Deanna Dean, Judy Wormstadt, Terri Moore, Wanda Effling, Jean Wormstadt, and Jerolyn Dean.

On Saturday, March 31, First Lutheran will once again hold a bake sale at the Artesian Community Center in conjunction with the CIA Easter Egg Hunt. FLCW members are asked to have their baked items at the center by 9 a.m.  In addition to the bake sale goodies, coffee or lemonade and cinnamon rolls will be available for everyone to enjoy a social time of visiting. Some of the quilts that the quilters have completed will be on display and available for sale, also.  Full size quilts will be priced at $50 each and baby quilts at $20. The money raised is used to fund many worthy causes.

The women of the ELCA Spring Gathering is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, at Our Saviors Lutheran in Flandreau. The cost to attend is $12, and the theme for the day is “This Changes Everything.” Ladies, mark your calendars and plan to attend this fun day of worship and fellowship. A silent auction is held and we may contribute and/or purchase items with the proceeds benefiting the Flandreau Indian School.

Deanna Dean led Bible study titled “Do You Trust Me?” based on Psalm 31:4.  Deanna also served lunch.

Gwen Effling brought an intricately designed quilt she has recently completed. It had a vintage look and many beautiful colors and patterns of material. She has sewn many quilts and it is always fun to see her artistic creations.  Thank you for sharing that with us, Gwen.

The quilt pattern and materials needed for sewing a special quilt for the Lutheran Outdoors quilt auction was discussed, and work will begin soon on this project.

The remainder of the evening was spent working on quilts in various stages of completion.  It is so fun to work together and see the completed quilts.  If anyone is interested in being a part of this group, all are welcome. Contact Judy Wormstadt or any of the ladies listed above for the next time and date for quilting.
