Letcher Legion chooses Boys State delegate

Government education convention celebrating 75 years

LarsonKoby 40 web    The Letcher American Legion Commander Darwin Morrison announced Koby Larson of Letcher as the Boys State Delegate for 2017.
Larson is a junior at Sanborn Central High School.  He is the son of Mike Larson and Bridget Larson.
Boys Staters are picked on academics, school and community activities. Boys State will be held at the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen, May 29-June 2. This is a very special year, as it is the 75th SD convention and they are expecting 350 delegates to attend. The local Legion pays the tuition to send each candidate.
The SD Boys state was founded in Aberdeen in 1940 and subsequent meetings were held in 1941 and 1942.  World War II made it necessary to drop this activity, but in 1946 SD Boys State was resumed.
The convention has a two-fold purpose: first, to better help youth understand and appreciate the American system of government and way of life, including the rights and responsibilities of citizenship; second, to give a better knowledge of the fundamental principles of government within the state of South Dakota. These objectives are sought by establishment of a mythical 51st State of the Union, comprised of counties and cities, giving Boys Staters an actual experience in control and operation of these units of government.
The American Legion wants the boys of South Dakota to understand the problems of government, as well as how it functions. Most years the members of congress or the Governor speaks at the convention. It’s a great time for boys to meet new friends, put themselves out there and run for office, or support another candidate. It is experiencing government from the local to a national level.
