SIOUX FALLS – For the first time this season, Augustana women’s basketball senior Shelby Selland has been named the NSIC South Player of the Week.

This is Selland’s second-career Player of the Week honor, and the first time this season a member of the Vikings women’s basketball program has garnered the award.

Over the course of two games this past weekend, Selland averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds per game, 2.5 blocks per game, and three assists per game. The center shot an astonishing 70 percent from the field over the weekend.

On Friday vs. Winona State, the Letcher native recorded her third double-double of the season in a 19 point, 10 rebound performance showing in the 78-67 win. She added two assists and two steals to go along with her double-double.

On Saturday in the 86-52 win over Upper Iowa, Selland poured in 18 points, corralled seven rebounds, dished out four assists, and added two steals.

The Vikings now return home for a two-game homestand against Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and wrap up the weekend on Sunday vs. Bemidji State with a 12:30 p.m. tip-off. Both games will take place at the Sioux Falls Arena.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, a Chevy Malibu was stolen from Letcher’s Main Street. The vehicle was recovered the next morning, about five miles outside of Letcher. There was no apparent damage to the vehicle, but there were personal belongings stolen from inside the car, some with monetary value and some with sentimental value. One thing taken was a camera bag that included a camera and a few SD cards used to store pictures on them that cannot be replaced.

The names of the victims whose property was stolen could not be released due to Marcy’s Law, but the Sanborn County Sheriff’s office is still investigating the crime and would like anyone with any information about this or any other crime to please contact them at 605-796-4511.

The District 6 American Legion Auxiliary president Theresa Maeschen from Mitchell held a  group meeting at the Letcher Community Center Saturday morning at 10 a.m., Nov. 3. Vernon, Mitchell and Letcher attended. Letcher unit furnished breakfast. Letcher Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml presented President Maeschen a patriotic scarf as a thank you gift. It was a very informative and fun meeting.

Sunday evening, the Letcher American Legion Auxiliary hosted a potluck supper for area veterans and their families at the Letcher Community Center. Apparently 45 people were in attendance and a great meal was provided. Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml gave a reading on the history of the armistice between Germany and Russia being signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month with the end of WW1 in 1918, 100 years ago this Veterans Day. Guest speaker Karen Klinkner of Artesian did a slide presentation on her military career and being picked for the very first Women’s Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in September.

Tom Johnson sang “God Bless the USA,” and Joyce Swagger played all hymns of each branch of the military. The veterans stood to be honored as the crowd sang.

The program was closed with everyone singing “God Bless America.”
