James Rogers

Crooks

James “Jim” Rogers, 82 of Crooks, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2019, at Ava’s Hospice House surrounded by his wife and children. 

A visitation with scripture service was held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Miller Westside Funeral Chapel in Sioux Falls. A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Oct. 9, at St. Michael Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to O’Gorman High School, or the Hungry Hearts Program.

James “Jim” Rogers was born Dec. 12, 1936, to Dwayne and Helen Rogers in Forestburg. He grew up and received his education in the Forestburg area.  Jim then served in the Air Force from 1954-1956.

He was united in marriage to Marcella Kirsch in 1959. Jim and Marcella “Marcy” had just celebrated 60 years of marriage in August. They were blessed with three children, Debbie, Steve and Mark. Jim worked for 40 years with the Sheet Metal Union #10 and retired in 1996.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, spending time with his family and attending the sporting events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim never missed opening pheasant season at the family farm. 

Jim is survived by his wife, Marcy Rogers; daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Luther; sons, Steve (Laurie) Rogers and Mark Rogers; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Larry (Jody) Rogers.

His parents, Dwayne and Helen; brother, Norman; and in-laws, Lawrence and Marie Kirsch, preceded him in death.

WANDA STEICHEN

Kennewick, Wash.

Wanda Grace (Burnett) Steichen, 90, of Packwood, WA/Kennewick, Wash., died on Sept. 9, 2019, at Trios Hospital in Kennewick, Wash.

Wanda was born to Roy and Alma (Katz) Burnett, on July 31, 1929 in Huron, S.D. She graduated from High School in Huron. She met her husband Robert at a dance in Huron, and they were married after her high school graduation on June 11, 1947. They were married 68 years and had nine children.

Wanda was a full time mom and homemaker to her husband and nine children. She was a caregiver to many of her grandchildren. She also found time to be a charter member and had the role of President during her membership with the Young Ladies Institute #214 in Richland, Wash. She was a cuer for the Mountain Ma’s and Pa’s Square Dance Club in Packwood, Wash. She also held roles as secretary of the Randle Grange #865 and Treasurer of the High Valley Women’s Club, as well as a member of the St. Mary’s Guild in Packwood, Wash.  

She enjoyed doing crafts, playing bridge and crocheting. She crocheted afghans for all of her nine children, baby blankets for her 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grand children and blankets for wedding gifts for her 23 grandchildren.  

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her father and mother, Roy and Alma (Katz) Burnett; her brothers, Clarence Burnett, Merle Burnett, Roger Burnett, Harold Burnett, Richard Burnett; and sisters, Charlotte DeNolf and Dorothy Knouse.  

Wanda is survived by her brothers, Clifford Burnett and Arlie Burnett; sisters, Jessie Root, Maxine Paye, and Beverley Allbee; sons, Kim (Lorna) Steichen, Kerry (Carrie) Steichen, Dana (Denise) Steichen, and  Rial (Esther) Steichen; daughters, Shawn (Cris) Harmia, Vicki (Randy) Buck-Bricker, Alicia (Steve) Merwin, Jaime (Craig) Hall, and  Lynna (Arvid) Morfin; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren plus three on the way.

She was a loving mother and wife, a caring and giving woman and will be missed by many.

Agnes Peters

Mitchell

Agnes Peters, 97, of Mitchell and formerly of Stickney, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 at United Methodist Church in Stickney. Burial was at Dudley Cemetery in rural Stickney. A visitation with prayer service was held Friday, Sept. 27 at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Agnes Borghild Fristad was born Aug. 21, 1922 to Reinert R. and Olivina (Carlson) Fristad in a farmhouse near Storla. Her parents were both Norwegian emigrants. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Agnes attended country grade school near Storla and two years of high school in Letcher.

She worked for a time in Mitchell and married Elmer Peters on Jan. 16, 1945. She taught Sunday school and was active in her church. Children born to them included Wenton, Denise, Mark, Jeff and Tim. She loved flowers, especially red roses. There was always a cake or cookies for unexpected guests. 

While at Firesteel, Agnes developed friendships with many staff. She especially enjoyed playing Bingo, word find books, writing letters, embroidery, company and watching the Minnesota Twins.

Agnes is survived by her children, Denise (Leslie) Yule of Bloomfield, Neb., Jeff (Carol) Peters of White Lake, and Tim (Eileen) Peters of Madison; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Peters; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Norma Fristad of Letcher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; sons, Mark and Wenton Peters; grandson, Eric Yule; and fourteen siblings, Oscar (Pearl) Fristad, Bessie Arens, Richard (Lelia) Fristad, Annie (Alfred) Podhradsky, Clara Fristad, Rose (Fred) Feistner, Ida (Alfred) Feistner, Selma (Ernest) Feistner, Eddie (Alverna) Fristad, Mandus Fristad, Palma (George) Lundberg, Melvin (Marie) Fristad and Violet (Robert) Moline.
