Mary Jane Fast, 60, of Yale, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at her home surrounded by family.

Her funeral service was on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation, with her family present, was Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Welter Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Mary Jane was born on Jan. 8, 1959 to parents Gerald and Grace (Wessels) Sheridan in Huron. Mary Jane attended school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1977. She attended Watertown Vo-Tech and college in Billings, Mont. Mary Jane worked many years as a teacher’s aide at the Iroquois School District.

Mary Jane married William (Bill) Fast on May 14, 1987 in Huron.

Mary Jane was very involved at First United Methodist Church and loved being involved in the different women’s and children’s groups. Mary Jane loved animals, especially horses, dogs, and watching her birds.

She is survived by her husband, Bill of Yale; children, Billie Jo (Kyle) Fast of Mitchell, Brady (Valerie) Fast of Watertown, Branden (Mikaela) Fast of Goodwin; four grandchildren; three brothers, Gerry (Peggy) Sheridan of Sioux Falls, Gary (Vicki) Sheridan of Italy, Texas and Darrell (Cindy) Sheridan of Huron; one sister, Carole Miller of Woonsocket; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Leslie Duty

Huron

Leslie Duty, 56, of Huron, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, at the Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket.

Her memorial service was Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019 at Winter Park. A memorial service will take place in Ohio at a later date.

Leslie Marie Duty was born Feb. 16, 1963 to Billy G. and Phyllis J. (Browning) Duty at Columbus, Ohio. She attended the Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Leslie moved to South Dakota to care for her dear friend, Peggy McDermott.

She enjoyed reading, watching movies, playing cribbage, word games and was the trivia queen.

Leslie is survived by her father, Billy (Lois) Duty of Ocklawaha, Fla., three sisters, Robyn (Roddy) Prater of Franklin, Ohio, Lisa (Tom) Linn of Troy, Ohio and Billee Duty of Dayton, Ohio; many nieces and nephews; and extended family, Megan McDermott, Brenna McDermott and the McDermott family.

Geraldine Franks

Mitchell

Geraldine “Gerry” Franks, 99, of Mitchell, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell with burial at the American Legion Cemetery. Visitation was Monday, Sept. 23, at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service.

Gerry Franks, daughter of Clarence and Leah (Doty) Rubert, was born Jan. 19, 1920, in rural Woonsocket. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937.

Gerry was united in marriage with James “Bud” Franks on June 18, 1939. She was employed at Woolworths in Mitchell for 35 years and was known as the caramel apple queen where she served thousands of apples during Corn Palace Week. Gerry was known and loved by so many for her smile, great sense of humor and willingness to help everyone.

She was an active member of First Reformed Church for many years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Myrna Oehlerking of Mitchell, Jerilyn Weber of Mitchell, Jim (Buff) Franks of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Joel (Tracy) Franks of Mitchell; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, in 1973; her daughter, Judith August in 2011; her siblings, Madeline, Evie, Bob and Addie; and son-in-law, Dan Weber.
