Obituaries

DuWayne A. Wallen, 85, of Clark, died Thursday morning, Aug. 8, 2019, at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket, surrounded by family.

Visitation was held Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Furness Funeral Home in Clark and one hour before services at the church. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 12, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Clark. Pastor Mark Tracy officiated. The pianist was Dorothy Fuller and the vocalists were Roger Nordhus and Rebecca Grassel. Casket bearers were DuWayne’s grandsons and the honorary casket bearers were his granddaughters. Burial was in the Clark Center Lutheran Cemetery of rural Clark with full military honors.

DuWayne Allen Wallen was born Dec. 1, 1933 to parents Justus and Ida (Johnson) Wallen in Garfield Township of Clark County. He grew up on the family farm and attended the country schools of Wallen School, Foster School and Bailey Lake School through the eighth grade. He then continued to work on the family farm and for area farmers including Jasper Lura and picked potatoes. DuWayne loved playing legion baseball and amateur baseball in his younger years.

DuWayne married Delma Jongbloed on Feb. 4, 1956 at Clark Center Lutheran Church in rural Clark. In August of 1956, he was drafted into the US Army. He was stationed in Germany from January of 1957 to August of 1958. He returned to the farm in the spring of 1959 and retired from that in the late 1980s. In 2005, DuWayne and Delma moved into Clark. DuWayne kept busy helping at Clark Community Oil, Orris Farms, Harold Nipe and, for a time, was co-owner of Hendry Seed House.

DuWayne enjoyed watching baseball and was a very integral part of the local legion baseball program, spearheading it for several years. He was a member of the Cagley-Smith Post #60 and the Clark United Methodist Church.

DuWayne is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Delma of Clark; his children, Steve (Billie) Wallen of Lake Preston, Sandy (Doug) Herrick of Clark, Penny (Jack) Schulz of Woonsocket and Mike (Laurie) Wallen of Aurora; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Phyllis Rowan

Woonsocket

Phyllis Jean Rowan, 91, of Woonsocket, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at the Weskota Manor Home in Wessington Springs.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5, at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. Burial will be at a later date in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Rapid City. Rev. Christopher Navurski officiated. Visitations were held Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Phyllis was born on April 2, 1928, to Logan and Alda (Newland) Boone of Huron. One of five children, her favorite times were spent at family gatherings with her siblings, all of whom preceded her in death.

Until health prevented her, she loved baking, cooking and canning for her family.

Phyllis is survived by three daughters, Patty (Mike) Fitzmaurice of Hartford, Vicki (Roger) Linke of Woonsocket and Karen (Ben) Mahoney of Spearfish; three sons, Craig (Lynn) Brueske of Huron, Todd (Angela) Brueske and Mark (Sandy) Brueske, both of Woonsocket; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Janice Lyle

Mitchell

Janice Lyle, 73, of Mitchell, died Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Avera Mary House in Pierre. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 3, at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.  Burial was at IOOF Cemetery in Gregory. Visitation was one hour prior to service.

Janice Elaine was born at the hospital in Gregory to Allen and Gladys (Herrmann) Rajewich on May 10, 1946. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory. She attended country school through eighth grade and was a graduate of Gregory High School. Robert Richey married Janice on June 14, 1963, at St. John Lutheran Church. Seven children were born to this union. After they separated, Janice moved to Mitchell, where she attended MTI. After graduating from MTI, she worked at Dakota Pork for many years.

Janice later married Larry Lyle, and they moved to Letcher. After they separated, Janice moved back to Mitchell. Janice was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and it was soon necessary for her to have medical assistance. She received care at Avera Brady in Mitchell and Golden Living Center in Pierre. She was then cared for at Mary House Long Term Care and most recently in hospice care.

Janice enjoyed painting and writing poetry. She had a beautiful voice and loved singing at church and for weddings. She served as a substitute organist at her church. Her latest endeavor was crocheting blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved reading novels.  She loved to care for animals and taught her children to do the same.

Janice is survived by her mother, seven children and their spouses, 20 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
