Arvid Olson

Sioux Falls

Arvid Olson, 90, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Woonsocket, passed away Friday, May 24, 2019, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at Heritage Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket following the memorial service.

Arvid was born on Sept. 18, 1928, to Carl and Martha (Hemre) Olson in Madison. He graduated from Rutland High School. Arvid was united in marriage to Evelyn Baysinger on Sept. 13, 1950, in Pipestone, Minn. On Nov. 8, 1950, he was drafted into the United States Army and served two years in active duty and five years in the reserves.

Most of his adult life was spent in petroleum sales, which included 10 years in management. This involved being located in several different states. When he was semi-retired, he moved to Woonsocket and worked with his son, Craig, in the melon business. He always maintained an interest in politics, so he ran for a seat as a Sanborn County Commissioner and was elected to four terms. Evelyn preceded Arvid in death on July 15, 2015.

Arvid was active in his church organizations, where he served on several different boards. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, playing cards and watching polka shows on Saturday evenings.

Arvid is survived by his children, Gloria (Jerry) Klaas of Woonsocket, Craig Olson (Julie Scott) of Sioux Falls and Doug (Kim) Olson of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Olson of Madison; and sister, Berna Schaaf of Madison.

Arvid was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; parents; daughter-in-law, Jill Olson; sister, Ruth Oftedahl; and two brothers, Bernard “Bud” Olson and Orville Olson.

Alice Zell

Huron

Alice S. Zell, 102, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron. 

Her funeral service was held on Saturday, May 25, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Alice Sadie Goudy was born on the family farm in Sanborn County on May 9, 1917, to parents George N. and Freeda (Trenham) Goudy. She attended country school in Sanborn County and graduated from Forestburg High School. She attended Norte Dame College in Mitchell and Huron College. She taught rural schools in Sanborn and Beadle counties. Alice was baptized into the Christian faith at the Forestburg Lutheran Church on April 22, 1937.  She loved playing the piano and taught private lessons in Sanborn and Beadle counties for many years. She and her brothers had a small family orchestra. She was also active in 4-H as a child and mother.

Alice married George Zell on Nov. 3, 1938. They operated the Rayville Country Store for four years before becoming farmers. They farmed in Sanborn County a few years before moving to their farm home in Beadle County. Because of her husband’s health, they retired from farming and moved to Huron in 1972. She worked in the Huron Nursing Home nutrition department for several years.

While a member of Immanuel Lutheran, rural Iroquois, she taught children’s classes, was Sunday school superintendent, church organist, taught choir and participated in the women’s organization. After transferring to American Lutheran Church in Huron, she continued her services in the women’s organization doing church visitation and Bible study classes. She was a member of the Huron Senior Center and participated in crafts.

Alice is survived by one daughter, Jean (Gary) Rieniets of Dubuque, Iowa; one son, Lyle (Annette) of Huron; daughter-in-law, Cheryl of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers-in-law, Verald (Phyllis) and Harland (Mary) Zell; and two sisters-in-law, Ester (Arthur, deceased) Moschkan and Lenora (Armand, deceased) Peskey; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Larry; parents; four brothers and spouses, Frank (Lucille), Clarence (Gertrude), Albert (Loretta) and Robert (Iola); seven brothers-in-law and spouses, Irwin (Lydia), Walter (Emma), Frank, Marvin (Maxine), William “Bill” (Shirley), Clifford, Bernard (Evelyn), Ferdinand (Phyllis); and two sisters-in-law, Minnie (Les) Northstrom and Mary Zell.

LeRoy Arhart

Woonsocket

LeRoy Arhart, 83, of Woonsocket, died Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at rural Lane. Visitation was held Thursday with a prayer service at the Storla Lutheran Church at rural Letcher. 

LeRoy Alfred Arhart was born Dec. 6, 1935, to Alfred and Clara (Feistner) Arhart on the farm in Jerauld County, Alpena Township. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Storla Lutheran Church. He attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Lane High School. He then attended Ag School at South Dakota State for two years. He joined the Army National Guard for six years.

On Nov. 4, 1960, LeRoy married Phyllis Salmen, a nurse in Wessington Springs. They farmed with his brother, LaVerne Arhart, and his stepfather, Leonard Sheffield, for many years. LeRoy remained active at the Storla Lutheran Church for over 50 years. LeRoy loved God, his family and farming. LeRoy and Phyllis adopted their children Rodney and Susan as infants, Rod in 1966 and Susan in 1968.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Rodney; daughter, Susan Anderson; two grandchildren; sisters, Agnes Ekstrum and Diane (Harlan) Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; parents-in-law, Russell and Elsie Salmen; sister, Alice (Gene Olson); brother, LaVerne (Judy) Arhart; brother-in-law, Richard Ekstrum; and a grandson, Briggs Anderson.
