Lila Thompson

Bellevue, Neb.

Lila Rose Thompson, 82, longtime resident of Bellevue, Neb., passed away on April 18, 2019. 

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 23, at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Burial was at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Storla. Visitation was held Monday, with a prayer service at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. 

Lila Rose Feistner-Thompson was born in a farmhouse north of Storla on Sept. 4, 1936, to Fred and Rose Feistner. She grew up in rural Woonsocket and attended Storla Lutheran Church. Lila graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton in 1954 and received her three-year degree in nursing from the Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell in 1958. 

Lila was married to David Thompson on Sept. 7, 1958. She worked as a registered nurse in the hospital in Volga and at the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames, Iowa. In 1962, they moved to Bellevue, Neb. While in Bellevue, Lila was the head nurse at the Bellevue Leisure Manor and spent many years teaching licensed practical nurses at Doctor’s Hospital in Omaha. 

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, David Thompson; three children, Debbie Entz of Wichita, Larry (Vicki) Thompson of Mitchell, Todd (Michelle) Thompson of Omaha; eight grandchildren; her brother, Merlin (Bonnie) Feistner, of Woonsocket; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Rose Feistner, and her son-in-law, David Entz. 

James McCain

Howard

James Leo McCain, 83, of Howard, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard. 

Services were in Howard, with a visitation on Friday, April 12, at Willoughby Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at Beach United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 13. 

James Leo McCain was born May 7, 1935, in Ramona, to George and Helen (Cavanaugh) McCain. Jim started his life on a farm, working the ground, and continued to the end of his life. At age nine, his family moved outside of Howard, where he farmed with his father and siblings until 1957, when he joined the United States Army. 

Jim married Gloria Seitz of Madison, on Sept. 20, 1959, and they continued to farm until moving to Howard in 1965. Jim worked at the Howard Elevator, then worked as a custodian at the Miner County Courthouse for 32 years. He was a bus driver for the Howard School District for 43 years. Along with his “real” jobs, Jim was the official observer of the daily weather in Howard for the National Weather Service, drove the Howard Ambulance, helped at the funeral home, shoveled snow, mowed lawns, planted flowers for the city, completed numerous church jobs for Beach United Methodist Church, and above all, was a sports fan to the core. One of Jim’s proudest memories was receiving a “Life Long Pass” to the Hanson Classic. 

Grateful and thankful for his life are his wife, Gloria; two children, Timothy (Karmen) McCain of Mitchell, and Lorna (Ken) Peters of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Rose of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bob and Vince McCain; and his sisters, Florence, Doty, and Betty McCain. 

Mildred Gluhm

Rapid City

Mildred Louise Gluhm, 94, passed away on April 13, 2019, at her son’s home with family present.

Visitation was held Wednesday, April 17, at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Bethel Church. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Mildred was born on Aug. 21, 1924, at home in Afton Township in Sanborn County to John Charles and Bessie Mae (Smith) Heinrichs. She lived on the farm until 1941 when her parents moved to Artesian, and she graduated from Artesian High School.

Mildred married Ordell Palmer Gluhm from Howard on June 10, 1945. They made their home in Miner County until 1964 when they moved to Hot Springs. They were blessed with six children, five of whom are still living.

Mildred worked for more than twenty years at the State Soldiers Home where she retired. She and her husband later moved to property they purchased outside of Rapid City. It was there where her beloved husband passed away in March of 2002. They had 56 years of happiness together.

Mildred is survived by her children, Daniel (Pondi) Gluhm of Rapid City, Luella (Elmer) Griffith of Casper, Wyo., Geraldine (Bob) Bridgford, Barbara (Kenneth) Horton of Sioux Falls, and Patty Reichelt of Custer; her sister, Henrietta Ann (Everett) Burns of Farmington, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Donald Gluhm; her husband, Ordell; her brother, John; her sisters, Miretta and Geraldine; and her son-in-law, Jim Reichelt.
