Cancer Tourney held in Woony

Springs, Plankinton come away with wins

    The annual Sanborn County Cancer Society Benefit Basketball Tournament for fifth and sixth grade was held Nov. 10 in the Woonsocket School Gym.
The girls winning team was Wessington Springs with Plankinton coming in second. Plankinton won the boys tourney with Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Team #2 in second.

    Robert Lee “Bob” Weeldreyer, 76, of Woonsocket, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, in Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 17 in St. Wilfrid Catholic Church, Woonsocket, with Fr. Jim Friedrich officiating. Visitations were in the Basham Funeral Home, Woonsocket, on Friday, Nov. 16 and one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. Burial with military rites by Woonsocket Post #29 was in St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery, Woonsocket.
Robert Lee “Bob” Weeldreyer was born on Oct. 9, 1936 in rural Sanborn County to Mike and Minnie (Wagner) Weeldreyer.  Bob was the second youngest of 10 children, Thelma (Henneger), Bud, Ann (Becker), Harvey, Elmer,   Marlene (Caffee), Darlene (Cuppy), Roger and Sally (Griggs). He grew up on a farm and went to country school, and town school in Forestburg. They then moved to Alpena where he graduated from high school in 1954.
After graduating from high school Bob entered the US Army and served primarily in Germany.
Upon his discharge from the Army, Bob returned to South Dakota to work on the Oahe Dam in Pierre and later to the Alpena area. He married Shirley Wolf on June 8, 1963 and they had one daughter, Tracy.
Bob worked at Huron Manufacturing until moving to Denver, Colo. In Denver he worked for Concrete Curb and Paving, started a business and did volunteer work for affordable housing with Annunciation  Housing Partners in Denver.  After retirement, he returned to Woonsocket, where he did construction and farmed part-time.
Bob was a fisherman and enjoyed hunting and camping. He maintained an active interest in professional football, basketball and golf. Bob enjoyed spending time with his three grandsons Max, Jack and Gus.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Woonsocket; his daughter, Tracy Van Cleave, and her husband, Mark, of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Thelma Hennager of Rapid City,  Ann Becker of Arkansas, Marlene Caffee of Rapid City, and Darlene Cuppy of Wessington Springs; and one brother, Bud of Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roger, Elmer and Harvey; and one sister, Sally Griggs.
