    Sanborn Central Elementary students were entertained by a guest reader on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Tessa Dee, Miss South Dakota 2013, read to students in grades PreK-5 as part of their “Book It” reading celebration.
Dee is a native of Mitchell and a graduate of the University of South Dakota. Miss Dee’s platform is Project Bookworm. It is a children’s literacy organization she created in 2011. Through Project Bookworm, she has created connections with children and books across the state of South Dakota. She has facilitated “Build-a-Book” workshops and worked with after school programs.
Dee’s goal is to read at more than 74 schools during her reign as Miss South Dakota. That is the previous record another Miss South Dakota holds.

 

 

 

 

The regular meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 29 met on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Prairie View Apartment B solarium. President Dawn Rassel led the opening ceremonies with Chaplain Judy Stenzel leading the opening prayer.
The minutes of the October meeting and treasurer’s report were given and approved. Bills were approved for payment for dictionaries and constitutions.
Evelyn Hjelm displayed the Christmas stockings to be filled and sent of the Veteran’s Adminisration Christmas Party. Twelve stockings will be sent for the veterans.
Dawn Rassel reported 23 pints of blood were obtained at the October blood drive. A thank you was read from United Blood Services.
The October newsletter from District 6 President Theresa Maeschen was read. The special focus of this year will be membership, veterans and reports. Units are reminded that American Education Week is Nov. 18-22.
Plans were made for the Veteran’s Day supper and a thank you will be published in the newspaper for the school employees.
A Christmas tree will be decorated at the next meeting with members bringing decorations with the theme of this year, “Veterans leave footprints on our hearts”.
Following the closing ceremonies, President Dawn Rassel adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Prairie View Apartments solarium on Dec. 3.
Bingo helper for November is Mary Kay Regynski with bars furnished by Barb Maurice. Cookies for PVCC bingo will be furnished by Barb Maurice and Cathy Hegg.

Katie and Ryan Olson are the parents of a baby boy, Conrad William, born Nov. 6, 2013. Conrad has a sister, Evie, and a brother, Landon.
Grandparents are Neal and Kathy Olson and Tim and Jan Grassel all of Artesian. Great-grandmothers are Edna Olson of Mitchell, Hilda Shroeder of Alexandria and Jean Ziegeldorf of Olivia, Minn.
