WE’RE BAA-AACK!

Blackhawks punch ticket to B’s in regional heart-stopper

THE BENCH WAS a tense bunch throughout the ping-ponging of the final minutes, but began to let loose in excitement as the final free-throws to seal the win swish through the hoop.

The Lady Blackhawks will make their second trip to the State B Tournament in as many years as they’ve been in existence.

In a nail-biter of a Region 5B Championship, the Lady Hawks proved they belong among the elite basketball teams in the state.

CO-HEAD COACHES Rob Baruth and Tim McCain hoist the Region 5B plaque.

Last year the fledgling Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks made their first appearance at the B’s, just their first year as a co-op. The Hawks finished in fourth place and have had their sites set on the crown ever since.

After graduating just two seniors, SC/W has settled into a routine of winning. Their one loss on the season is to the state tourney’s top seed, Warner.

While still young, still with just two seniors, the Lady Hawks have earned much respect the past two years among fans and critics.

SC/W is seeded number four and is set to play number five seed Sully Buttes in the second game of the Tournament’s first session, 1:45 p.m. in the Huron Arena.

ABERDEEN — Corrie Snedeker and Alison Nesheim, both of Woonsocket, have been honored by South Dakota Farmers Union for their work in the organization’s youth education program.
Snedeker, Nesheim and a dozen other youth were recipients of this year’s South Dakota Farmers Union Torchbearer Award, the highest honor youth can receive within the family farm organization.
The youth were honored during the Torchbearer ceremony Saturday, Feb. 16, at the South Dakota Farmers Union’s 98th annual state convention held in Aberdeen.

“I’m extremely proud of what Corrie and Alison have accomplished over the years,” said SDFU Education Director Bonnie Geyer. “They’ve shown great leadership, and are always ready and willing to participate in Farmers Union events. It’s a great honor for all of our Torchbearers and their families.”
Corrie Snedeker is the son of Mark and Lisa Snedeker. He is a senior at Woonsocket High School and plans to attend Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown this fall.
Alison Nesheim is the daughter of Jodi Weber and Brian Nesheim. She is currently a student at Mitchell Technical Institute studying to become a medical assistant.
A total of 14 South Dakota young people achieved Torchbearer status this year. It’s a title given to youth who complete all of the Farmers Union’s annual achievement awards. Young people who participate in Farmers Union education programs focus on family farm and ranch agriculture, learn about member-owned cooperatives, take leadership training and learn many other life skills.
Each year, young people involved in Farmers Union participate in educational trips and tours around the state and region including a trip to the state Capitol in Pierre, several regional cooperative headquarters’ in the Twin Cities, All-State’s Leadership Camp in Bailey, Colo., and the National Farmers Union convention.
This year’s Torchbearer Award recipients will have the opportunity to travel to Springfield, Mass., to attend the National Farmers Union convention in March.

ABERDEEN — Lisa Snedeker of Woonsocket served as a voting delegate during the National Farmers Union’s annual convention March 2-5, at Springfield, Mass.
Snedeker is one of four delegates who were elected during South Dakota Farmers Union’s state convention last month in Aberdeen.
Snedeker farms with her husband, Mark, and their children near Woonsocket and works at Dakotaland Federal Credit Union in Huron. She  attended the four-day convention in Massachusetts to discuss the organization’s policies and voted on its final policy program.
Legislative staff at National Farmers Union use the policy program to work with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on issues important to family farmers and ranchers. The policy is crafted by a grassroots process that brings issues from the local, county and state levels to the national delegates for consideration.
Other delegates elected were Paul Dennert of Columbia, Steve Harwood of Union Center and Tammy Basel of Union Center. Farmers Union President Doug Sombke of Groton, Vice President Wayne Soren of Lake Preston, and board member Terry Sestak of Tabor will also serve as voting delegates at the convention.
