JASON WHITE, manager of the SD Wheat Growers Woonsocket location, accepts the award.

Eight Wheat Growers locations, including the Woonsocket location, have been honored with the Meritorious Achievement award at the South Dakota Safety & Health Conference Governor’s Safety Awards luncheon in Sioux Falls. Meritorious Achievement awards are given for superior safety performance.
The Wheat Growers locations that received awards were: Carpenter, Huron Agronomy and Grain, Kennebec, Miller, West Terminal – Aberdeen, Willow Lake, Woonsocket and Yale.
Since 1993, the annual Governor’s Safety Awards has recognized employers with superior safety records. Employers submit workplace injury data that is compared with state and national data and the entrant’s past performance. Ongoing safety programs and activities are also considered.
“It is especially fitting that Wheat Growers locations receive the Governor’s Safety Award as we head into harvest,” Bill Spreeman, Wheat Growers Vice President, Safety, Environmental and Regulatory Affairs, said. “One of Wheat Growers’ core values is a commitment to a positive safety culture. These eight locations are fine examples of how we take that core value to heart every day.”
Wheat Growers is a grain and agronomy cooperative in the heart of South and North Dakota. Owned by the members it serves, Wheat Growers exists to provide, with integrity, customers with reliable markets, services and quality products through a safety-oriented, profitable and innovative organization.

Congrats to Jonathan Linke, Sanborn County 4-H member, on his Champion Beef Premier Exhibitor honors at the South Dakota State Fair and to Justin Krell, Aurora County 4-H member, for placing second in the contest.

Sanborn County 4-Her, Jonathan Linke, son of Henry and Paula Linke, was awarded Premier Exhibitor in the Beef Division.  Aurora County 4-Her, Justin Krell, received second in the contest.
The Premier Exhibitor Award is earned by a 4-Her who demonstrates livestock production and management knowledge, superior decision-making and communication skills and recognizes excellence in the demonstration of project knowledge.
One Premier Exhibitor is awarded each year at the South Dakota State Fair in the areas of beef, sheep and swine.  Twenty percent of the 4-Her’s score is based on an industry review, where a panel of judges ask questions on at least two issues pertinent to the specie.
The 4-Her must also participate in the livestock skill-a-thon during the State Fair which accounts for 40 percent of their score.
A production and management quiz consisting of a written exam focusing on practical application of skills as well as earning a showmanship ribbon while showing their livestock at the State Fair are the remaining portions of the Premier Exhibitor’s score.
In the Beef Skill-a-Thon contest at the South Dakota State Fair, Jonathan Linke received second place in the senior division and Aaron Linke placed third.  Nathan Linke placed second in the junior division.

Motivational speaker and author Holly Hoffman of Eureka passes the torch to juniors and seniors from Woonsocket, Wessington Springs and Sanborn Central Tuesday, Oct. 8, as part of the SD Farmers Union Junior REAL Development Program.

Holly Hoffman knows a thing or two about being a survivor. The Eureka native caught national attention on CBS’s Survivor Nicaragua, as the last woman standing in her tribe. This past week she stood in front of high school students from Woonsocket, Wessington Springs and Sanborn Central as part of the SD Farmers Union Junior Rural Economic and Leadership (Jr. REAL) Development Program.
“When you face your fears, you gain strength and courage,” Hoffman told the young crowd. “Do not let your past mistakes define your future.” Hoffman is a mother of three, motivational speaker, author and medical student and shared how her rural upbringing shaped her personal ambitions.
The Junior REAL program, now in its fifth year, invests in high school juniors and seniors and presents a comprehensive one-day seminar to students from Woonsocket, Wessington Springs and Sanborn Central. Student participants engage in hands-on exercises while learning techniques to articulate civic responsibility. The conference focuses on leadership development, credit issues and identity theft, life skills and motivation.
Jr. REAL spurs young people to give back and help out in their own communities and build their leadership skills. The program is specifically focused on building young leaders in rural South Dakota.
Motivational speaker and trainer John Beranek, of Miller, shared the microphone and reminded the youth about community service. “When you decide to do something good for someone, they are not always ready to receive that help. You must be careful not to shame them and always be respectful.” Beranek cited his experiences from the Pay It Forward group he founded to anonymously give to those in need. “Helping out others is incredibly rewarding.”
