Two injured in Sunday morning crash

Driver charged with vehicular battery, DUI

Two Sanborn County men were injured and one was charged with a felony in an early Sunday morning, Oct. 13 crash on a gravel road five miles north and five miles west of Mitchell.
Blake Hemminger, 23, of Letcher was driving a Ford F-250 north on 404th Avenue just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning and lost control near 247th Street. The vehicle swerved into the west ditch, overcorrected and swerved into the east ditch, rolled and came to rest back on the road.
Joseph Sandness, 28, and Patrick Johnson, 27, both of Woonsocket were thrown from the vehicle. Both men suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Neither were wearing seatbelts.
Two other passengers, Jackson Grassel, 29, of Woonsocket and Connor Sachtjen, 22, of Burke were also not wearing seatbelts, but were not ejected. Grassel and Sachtjen were uninjured.
Hemminger was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. He was arrested for first-offense, misdemeanor DUI and vehicular battery, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and  $20,000 fine. He was released on bail from Davison County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
The SD Highway Patrol, Davison County Sheriff’s Office, Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Ambulance and the Letcher Fire Department responded to the accident.

The Letcher Ladies Auxiliary met on Monday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Letcher Community Center.
Member present were: Sandi Ruml, Edith Moe, Sally Olson, Shirley Ruml and Mary Luckett.
Shirley Ruml spoke to the group about membership. Presently we have 103 members. The quota has been raised so a few more members are needed to reach that goal.
The Letcher Legion men will be having a pancake feed on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Letcher Community Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Monday, Nov. 11 the Letcher Ladies Auxiliary will have a Veteran’s Day appreciation potluck. Serving will start at 6 p.m. at the Letcher Community Center.
Nov. 18-22 is Education Week. To show appreciation, the Auxiliary unit will be taking apples to the teachers at Sanborn Central.
Don’t forget, the Legion men will have their annual Turkey Bingo Night Dec. 14.
Hostess was Sally Olson.
The next meeting will be Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Clara Wise was hostess.

Artesian Town Board proceedings

Unapproved Minutes October 9, 2013

The Town of Artesian Council met on October 9, 2013 in regular session at the Artesian Community Center. Council Member Effling called the meeting to order with Council Member Richard and Danek, Tom Fridley and Finance Officer Molly Ebersdorfer present.
The minutes of the September 4, 2013 meetings were read; motion to approve by Danek, seconded by Effling, motion carried. Finance Officer reports were read; motion to approve by Danek, seconded by Richard, motion carried.
