Sanborn County residents are invited to participate in the 2013 Sanborn County Open Class Event being held during the 4-H Achievement Days on July 31 and Aug. 2-3.  This is open to anyone residing in Sanborn County or who is a member of a Sanborn County club, organization, etc.
Exhibits should be checked in between 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg with judging following.
Exhibitors who wish to show in Open Class may choose from several different project areas including: art and china painting, culinary (canning), crafts, needlework, photography and horticulture. A complete listing of the different classes and lots in the “2013 Sanborn County Open Class Handbook” can be found at the Extension office located in the Courthouse, the Way Station and Express Stop.
This year, entries judged “Best of Show” in Sanborn County will be taken to the State Fair to be judged in the special “County Best of Show” category.  “Best of Show” will be awarded in the following categories:
Adult division:
• Art, any media;
• Canning, jellies/jams (one-half pint clear glass jar);
• Canning, pickles, (one pint, clear glass jar);
• Child’s garment;
• Craft;
• Needlework;
• Quilted wall hanging or pillow, any method;
• Professional photography; and
• Amateur photography.
Junior division:
• Art, any media;
• Canning, jellies/jams (one-half pint clear glass jar);
• Canning, pickles, (one pint, clear glass jar);
• Child’s garment;
• Craft;
• Needlework;
• Quilted wall hanging or pillow, any method; and
• Photography.
Exhibitors are reminded that entries they wish to take to the State Fair must be pre-registered at the State Fair office by July 31.  Exhibits entered in Open Class at Achievement Days do not automatically get entered in the State Fair.  Open Class State Fair books are available online at www.sdstatefair.com.

The family of Francis and Edith Howard enjoyed a reunion in Wichita, Kan. on July 5-7.
Theresa and Stan Smeltzer, Stan and Melinda Smeltzer, Scott and Alison Smeltzer, Fr. Stuart Smeltzer, Shaun Smeltzer and Stacy and Dwayne Cummings hosted the event.
The family celebrated Jim Howard’s 50th birthday, as well as births of 11 babies since the last reunion in 2011.  Recent wedding engagements between Eric Smeltzer and Cara Cotter and  Sydney Cummings and Zach Banick will be set for 2014.
The family enjoyed the Sedgwick County Zoo, dinner at Eberly Farms, golfing at MacDonald Park, the Kansas Star Casino, walking the Botanical Gardens, the Wichita Art Museum and Exploration Place. Saturday evening’s mass was celebrated by Fr. Stuart Smeltzer at St. Joseph Catholic Church with dinner following in the parish hall.  The reunion concluded with a Wichita Wingnuts baseball game on Sunday afternoon.

Frank and LaRay Howard will be hosting the next reunion in 2015.

The 32nd Annual Ball Reunion, hosted by Larry and Beverly Ball, was held in Woodbury, Minn., July 19–21. Activities included a Twins baseball game, golfing, shopping and swimming. Larry and Bev provided videos of past reunions for Friday night’s potluck supper and Beverly created a slideshow of the nine siblings and families for Saturday’s banquet entertainment.
