Patricia Merriman

Carrington, N.D.

Patricia Merriman, 68, of Carrington, N.D., died Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Carrington Health Center in Carrington.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at the Evans Funeral Home in Carrington with Father Bernard Pfau officiating. Graveside service will be at St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery in Woonsocket on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m. Visitation is Thursday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Patricia Louise Brenner was born July 23, 1947, in Parkston, the daughter of Harold and Janice (Roeder) Brenner. She attended school in Woonsocket and graduated from Woonsocket High School.
She was united in marriage to William Merriman on Feb. 12, 1966, in Denver, Colo., and later moved back to Woonsocket. In 1976, she and Bill moved to Bottineau, N.D., where Pat provided daycare in their home. In 1993, they moved to Carrington, where she worked for the Chieftain for 10 years, and later went to work at Super Valu for a time.
Pat was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was involved in many church activities. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling places with them. Her hobbies included bowling, playing bingo, reading, dancing and computer socializing. She also enjoyed her cats and bird watching.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Merriman; four sons, Jeffrey (Vicki) Merriman of Selma, N.C., Christopher Merriman of Prescott, Ariz., Matthew (Dawn) Merriman of Lewisburg, W.Va., and Mark Merriman of Wahpeton, N.D.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Scott Brenner of Gilbert, Ariz.; two sisters, Cheryl Kahle of Piedmont and Nancy (Mike) Sager of Queens Creek, Ariz.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harold Brenner; and Bill’s parents, John and Pauline Merriman.

Lee Hinker

Forestburg

Lee Hinker obit 34    Lee Joseph Hinker, 58, of Forestburg, died Thursday, April 7, 2016 at his home.  Funeral services were Monday, April 11, 2016 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.  Burial was in St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery in Woonsocket.  Visitation was Sunday evening with a scripture service at the Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
Lee was born on March 4, 1958 at Wessington Springs to William and Bernita (LaBreche) Hinker.  He graduated from Forestburg High School in 1976.  He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech and graduated from the H-VAC program.
On Aug. 3, 1985, he married Janet Authier. To this union one son, Drew M. Hinker, was born. He farmed with his father and mother.  They raised melons and Lee established a melon stand in Aberdeen, where he was well known for fresh produce, especially pumpkins. He often provided free pumpkins to the schools in Aberdeen. He always enjoyed being around people, especially family and friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Drew Hinker, Woonsocket; his mother, Bernita Hinker, Mitchell; two sisters, Melanie (Dave) Blevins, Denver, Colo., Cathy (James) Hegg, Huron; three brothers, Leonard (Nancy) Hinker, Fedora, Roger (Pat) Hinker, Forestburg, and Mark (Carol) Hinker, Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Hinker, a sister, Beverly Hinker, and a brother, Anthony Hinker.

HELEN PHILLIPS

Mitchell

Helen Phillips obit 34    Helen J. Phillips, 93, of Mitchell, died Monday April 11, 2016 at Firesteel Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Helen Jane Phillips was born Nov. 27, 1922 to Dewey and Doris Bridenbaugh in Miller. She was raised on a farm 20 miles south of Miller, and moved to Mitchell in 1941 to attend business school. On March 13, 1946, she married Lawrence Phillips of Letcher. In 1946, they started farming on a farmstead 10 miles north and one mile east of Mitchell. They farmed at that location for 34 years and retired to a home in Letcher. In 1986, Helen and Larry moved to Mitchell and to Countryside Living in 2003. Helen then moved to Firesteel Healthcare Center in 2014.
Helen and Larry were avid travelers and took many family vacations and completed their goal of visiting all 50 states during retirement. While in Mitchell, Helen was an active member at the First United Methodist Church. She also participated in the hand bell choir and Sweet Adeline’s, and did knitting and crocheting for charity.
She is survived by her son, Mark (Sue) Phillips of Goose Creek, S.C.; daughter, Jennifer (Denton) Chance of Letcher, daughter, Joyce (Doug) Olson of Mitchell, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, son-in-law, Gary Ehlers, grandson, David Olson, and her sister, Barbara Obert.
