Lewis Hufford, 93, of Mitchell, formally of Artesian, passed away Tuesday evening Feb. 21, 2017, at the Firesteel Nursing Home in Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Artesian. Visitation was held at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket on Wednesday, March 1, from 5-7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Lewis William Hufford was born Nov. 24, 1923, to Gilbert and Lena (Bickford) Hufford. They lived on a farm five miles south of Artesian, then, they lived on a farm north of Fedora. He went to a country school for eight years, and three years to Fedora High School.
In 1955 Lewis moved to Artesian with his mother and brother. Lewis and his brother, Donald, ran a cream station in Artesian for Armour’s Creamery in Mitchell, and he also drove a cream truck for a while. He drove a school bus for 27 years for the Artesian School District. He worked at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, mowing 11 acres four times a month for four months for 27 years, and dug graves by hand using a spade and sand shovel.
On July 6, 1968, Lewis was united in marriage to Violet Margaret Dorothea Wiederrich at the Methodist Church in Alexandria.
Lewis was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith in 1972 at Artesian.
He is survived by a step-daughter, nieces and nephews, and an adopted step-son.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet; six brothers, Dewey, Wesley, Frank, Chester, Bert and Donald; four nieces, Nancy, Janice, Susan and Audrey; and five sisters-in-law, Norma, Selma, Irene, Wilma and Betty.
