Ilo Jean Hilgenberg, 90, died Thursday, May 10, 2018.
Funeral services were Monday, May 14, at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell, with family present one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Artesian.
Ilo was born April 3, 1928, to Elmer and Edna (Gudmunson) Barta. She attended school in Forestburg and Artesian, graduating from Artesian. She worked in Mitchell at Woolworths and as a nurse’s aide at the Methodist Hospital and Firesteel Health Care Nursing Home. She also did volunteer work for the Salvation Army. Ilo was a long-time member of the First Reformed Church in Mitchell and volunteered for various church functions. The church was a big part of her social and spiritual life.
Ilo married Darwin Hilgenberg on Sept. 15, 1946, and they remained in Mitchell for the majority of their lives. She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, volunteering and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Ilo is survived by two sons, Darc (Kate) of Victoria, Minn., and Brian (Lyn) of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Rhonda (Verlyn) Ramse of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin; her parents, Elmer and Edna Barta; sister, Mary Ann Arnett; brothers, Virgil, Emmit and Francis Barta; and infant son, Dexter.
Memorials are accepted in the name of Ilo Hilgenberg to the Avera Hospice in Sioux Falls.
