Kaija Claire Jared, 91, passed away peacefully at Avera Sacred Heart Majestic Bluffs in Yankton on Sunday, June 10, 2018.
Memorial services were held Thursday, June 14, at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill. Visitation with the family was held following the service. Inurnment of her ashes will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Vangen Lutheran Church organ repair fund.
Kaija Claire Jared was born Sept. 9, 1926, to Jorgen and Helena (Pfeiffer) Bruget in Volin. She graduated from Volin High School and Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell.
She married Marvin R. Jared in Mitchell on Feb. 12, 1947. She taught at Hurley before her marriage and was a substitute teacher where her husband was superintendent. Marvin was superintendent at Woonsocket School from 1963-1967.
Kaija was an avid genealogist, having published the Bruget-Freng family tree and history in 1961 and 1980. She also wrote a history for the community of Volin. She was a member of Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, the Yankton Area Genealogical Society, and was secretary/treasurer for the Volin Cemetery for many years.
Kaija is survived by four children: Claire Martin of Onida, Arthur Jared of Springfield, Wendy Tassler of Harrisburg, and Edison (Ann) Jared of Mission Hill; two sisters, Fern Davis of Lodi, Calif., and Diane Gunderson of Yankton; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Marvin “Bud” Jared; her parents; a brother, Bernard; sisters, Barbara, Janis and Yvonne; two sons-in-law, Larry Martin and Randy Tassler; and twin grandsons, Roy and Duane Martin.
Goglin Funeral Home of Yankton handled the arrangements.
