​Sanborn Central sophomore Katie Schmit received word recently that she won first place  at the post level in the VFW Voice of Democracy speech contest.

Schmit’s recorded speech was sent to the VFW Post 270 in Mitchell. From the post contest, Schmit’s speech went to the district, where it was a runner-up. She will be invited to an Americanism Day celebration to present her speech.
