Leland Dean “Ole” Olson, 87, of Mitchell, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Interment will be at the Columbarium at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery with full military rites.
Leland was born on Jan. 1, 1934, in Forestburg, to Robert and Vera (Howe) Olson. He attended school in Artesian. Leland later joined the Army and became a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles,” jumping a total of 18 times. He also played football for the Army. He worked as a paramedic, firefighter, carpenter, business owner and a police officer.
Leland married Elizabeth McKee on Nov. 25, 1962, and the two were inseparable until her death on May 23, 2021. Leland lived in South Dakota until the age of 40 when he moved to Colorado, returning to South Dakota in 2005.
Leland enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and camping. He and Elizabeth also loved to dance. He took care of his family, even up until the day he passed away, constantly trying to take care of his daughters.
Leland is survived by his children, Sondra Waltenbaugh and Sheri (Jeff) Fowler; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Leland was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son, Steven; and two brothers, Robert and James Olson.
