October 2023

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the oral interp teams from both Woonsocket and Sanborn Central worked together to host an oral interp contest at Woonsocket High School. Students from Woonsocket, Sanborn Central, Wessington Springs, James Valley Christian, Lake Preston and Mitchell Christian attended the contest. Each student performed their piece three times to three different judges and then received an average score to determine their award placing.

Lisa Snedeker and the Dakotaland Federal Credit Union also provided goody bags for each oral interp student who competed.

The results for Saturday’s contest are as follows, from Woonsocket: McKenzie Baruth received a superior in oratory; Kyla Terkildsen earned a superior in duet; Emilie Lindgren received a superior plus in humorous reading; and Jalyn Grassel earned a superior in serious reading and a superior in duet; from Sanborn Central: Sean Bitterman earned an excellent plus in humorous reading; Olivia Conrad received an excellent plus in oratory; Temperance Salathe earned an excellent plus in storytelling; and their readers theatre team of Sean Bitterman, Parker Ettswold, Clay Moody, Grant Edwards and Erick Melendez received an excellent plus for their performance.

For the students from Sanborn Central, this was their first time performing for this season, and for Woonsocket team members it was their second performance. Next up for the Sanborn Central team is Sioux Falls Washington’s Circle of Courage meet on Friday, Oct. 20, and the Woonsocket kids will be in Huron on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

The Lady Blackhawks volleyball team had another hectic week with three games in four days, but it proved to be successful for them as they won two of the three games and their wins were both at home.

The week started with a game against Howard on Monday, Oct. 9 in Forestburg. The Blackhawks came out on top winning in four sets with scores of 26-24, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-15.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the ladies were on the road to Iroquois to take on the Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks. SCW struggled a bit to get things to come together, and they lost a strong fight in four sets with scores of 13-25, 25-18, 20-25 and 21-25.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, the Lady Blackhawks were back on their home court playing against the Wildkats from Kimball/White Lake in Woonsocket. Again, they had to take the game to four sets, but they did end victoriously with set scores of 25-22, 10-25, 25-19 and 26-24.

The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Lady Blackhawks improved to 12-12 for the season, so far. They faced Hitchcock-Tulare in Hitchcock on Tuesday night, and they travel to Emery to compete against the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies on Friday, Oct. 20. They then have their final regular-season game on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Sanborn Central against Mt. Vernon/Plankinton. It will be Senior Night and Dig Pink Night, so a special night for many reasons. As always, it will be on Sanborn Central’s Santel channel and LiveTicket to watch from home.

On Friday, Oct. 13, under very wet conditions, the Blackhawks hosted the Rapid City Christian (RCC) Comets for a gridiron brawl in the mud. It was truly a defensive fight as the Comets won 0-7 with their only touchdown coming in the fourth quarter of play.

The Blackhawks face the Comets again in their first round of playoffs tonight (Thursday) in Wessington Springs, starting at 5 p.m. Hopefully, the better weather conditions will work in their favor to redeem themselves and move on to the next round. The second round of post-season play is on Thursday, Oct. 26.
