The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks begin their trek into 11-man football with a 36-8 victory over Wagner on Friday night.
After the teams traded a few punts, the Blackhawks got on the board late in first quarter on an interception return by Trey Ulmer. Trent Kingsbury ran in two points for an 8-0 lead. The Blackhawks put up 21 points in the second quarter, all on John Witte touchdown runs. Witte was also successful on all three of the extra point kicks. The score was 29-0 at halftime.
Before the game started, the facility at Wagner was having some electricity issues, and part of the first quarter was played without a clock. Some of the power returned during the first half, but at end of the first quarter, the coaches were informed that the lights would not be coming back on and that a decision would have to be made at halftime of what the options would be to finish the game. Once halftime came, the coaches from both teams, the referees and administrators from the schools met on the field. It was determined that everyone would travel to Corsica and finish the game on their field as soon as their game was over.
After arriving at Corsica and waiting for a few minutes for the Corsica-Stickney vs. Avon game to finish, the Blackhawks and Wagner took the field and began their second half. The only scoring for the Blackhawks in the second half came on a long pass from Trent Kingsbury to Trey Weber. Wagner got on the board when they returned a fumble for a score.
Leading the way for the Blackhawks was John Witte, who had 183 yards rushing on 18 carries and three touchdown runs. He was also four-for-four kicking extra points. Trent Kingsbury threw for 156 yards on 10 of 13 passing with one touchdown throw. Defensively, the Blackhawks intercepted four passes with Trey Ulmer having three interceptions himself.
Next up, the Blackhawks host Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan at Woonsocket this Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
