Winter storm hits South Dakota and buries Sanborn County with snow

This drift was in the walkway to get into the Sanborn Weekly Journal’s office. A huge thank you goes out to Steve Dammann and Marty Wingert for clearing it out of our way on Sunday so the paper could go out on time.

The big story this week is definitely the blizzard that hit the area starting on Friday afternoon and continuing until about 4 p.m. on Saturday afernoon.

Reports have come in at 18 to 24 inches of snow fallen; no one has reported receiving less than 18 inches in our area. Drifts were several feet high all over Sanborn County, and many farmers are in the heart of calving season, so this snow proved to be quite a nuisance. At press time, everyone was starting to get back to their normal routine, and roads and driveways were cleared off by machinery, hand-held shoveling and the beautiful sun. However, there is more snow in the forecast, so this may not be the end of our frosty spring.
