Velma R. Schabot, 80, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully with family present on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at her home.
The Funeral Mass was Wednesday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Wilfrid Catholic Church at Woonsocket, with Fr. Jim Friedrich officiating. Visitation was at Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket on Tuesday, April 18, from 5-7 p.m., with a scripture service at 6:30 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial was at St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery.
Velma was born May 25, 1936, to Eaner and Esther (Farrington) Krog, along with her twin sister, Verna. She grew up on the farm west of Gann Valley with her 11 siblings and graduated from Wessington Springs High School. Following graduation, Velma moved to Woonsocket to work for her cousin, Dr. H. G. Krog Veterinary Service.
In Woonsocket, she met and married Earl Schabot on Sept. 28, 1954. To this union five children were born, Randy (Mary) Schabot of Woonsocket, Gloria Vetter, of Woonsocket, Ron (Julie) Schabot of Rozet, Wyo., Esther (Dave) Buck of Mitchell, and Patti (Carey) Tobin of Mitchell.
Velma worked various jobs in Woonsocket, including Parsons Produce, Steichen Chevrolet, and many years at Sanborn County Bank and First National Bank. She was a member of St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket.
Velma enjoyed her yard work, playing cards, reading, cooking for her family, and spending time with long-time special friend, Ken Anderson.
Velma is survived by her children; her 12 grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret, Verna and Jean; one brother, Lowell; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Sparky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; her parents; in-laws, Nick and Louise Schabot; son-in-law, John Vetter; three sisters and five brothers.
