4-H

Tatiana Roberts, daughter of Sam and Jelitza Roberts of Woonsocket, was recently notified that she was the winner of a Thanksgiving essay contest in the 4-H Division.

Every Thanksgiving, the President of the United States is gifted a turkey – and usually pardons it as a Thanksgiving tradition. This year, for the first time, that special turkey came from right here in South Dakota. Two toms were picked from the bunch on a turkey farm in Riverside Colony near Huron to travel to Washington D.C. to meet President Donald Trump on Thanksgiving Day.

To help commemorate the event, the South Dakota Poultry Industries Association held a Thanksgiving essay contest with categories in 4-H, FFA and Family.

Roberts won the contest, and as a result, she will receive $500 for her 4-H club, the Town ‘N Kountry Kids Red Group 4-H Club.

On Sunday, Dec. 2, Darold Bitterman of Mitchell and his assistant Mike Piehl came to the Sanborn County 4-H Building in Forestburg to present a Trapping Workshop. There were 32 people in attendance to learn about trapping different types of animals and how to set up traps. The men also discussed and demonstrated the best way to skin an animal.

The Sanborn County Extension Office is planning on having the same workshop on Sunday, Dec. 9, starting at 1 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Forestburg. It is open to all adults and youth who are interested in trapping and learning how to skin animals correctly and safely.

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Blue Group 4-H club has chosen a community service project to help provide needed items for the Sanborn County Food Pantry. Collection boxes are located at Sanborn Central School, Artesian Cortrust Bank, and Letcher Cortrust Bank. The club is collecting needed non-food items for our families in need. Examples are: toothpaste and brushes, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, dish soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, and cleaning supplies. The members wish to thank anyone who chooses to assist them in their community service project. Boxes will be collected on Dec. 21 and delivered to Sanborn County’s Food Pantry.
