Around the County

Evan Ohlrogge, with Morgan and Collin Schmiedt’s assistance, presents information gathered about the junction at Highways 34 and 37 to the State DOT Commission to convince the Commissioners to add overhead flashing red lights to the corner.

Although the junction of Highways 34 and 37 has been upgraded with four-way stop signs and rumble strips to warn drivers of an upcoming stop, the students of Woonsocket High School have ideas of more that could be done to the same junction to make it even safer for drivers of all ages. So, all the students in grades 7-12, approximately 150 in all, and teachers, a few community members and Superintendent Rod Weber all traveled to Pierre to continue to plead their case and present their information about the changes at the “three-mile corner.”

As a result of insistence from Woonsocket High School’s student body, road work started on what is known as “the three-mile corner” at the junction of Highways 34 and 37. Rumble strips, four-way stop signs and red, flashing lights are changes being added to try to make the corner safer for drivers. The students of Woonsocket High School went to Pierre on Wednesday to thank the DOT.

In times of grief, it is often hard to find the right words. You may find it hard to speak in general. While this statement may reign true for many of us, the Woonsocket High School has been using their voices to initiate change within our community.  This tragedy has left our community devastated and left many searching for answers.

The Woonsocket High School has been taking proactive steps to speak out against the Highway 34-37 junction, also known as the “Three-Mile Corner” by locals, after the tragic accident that took the lives of three young boys and injured two others. Students within the high school were actively searching for a solution to end this terror from striking our community again. This led students to take action by reaching out to various state departments and their local legislators asking for change.

Tragedy hits Sanborn County

Three Woonsocket teens killed in three-car collision

As the overabundance of rain and flooded roads became the biggest concern for most of the citizens of Sanborn County last week, their attention was abruptly changed to concern over the loss of three young lives from the Woonsocket community.

After some area schools, including Mitchell, had to close due to severe flooding after over seven inches of rain fell in under three hours in that area, and some activities had to be cancelled or postponed due to flooded roads, the people of Sanborn County thought they may have dealt with the worst problems to experience this fall, and that all changed in an instant.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, around 8 p.m., a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero with four young boys in it was traveling east on Highway 34 headed to Huron. When they got to what is known as the “three-mile corner,” they turned to go north to Huron on Highway 37 and collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling west on Highway 34. The Alero spun around and collided with a 2011 Chevrolet Impala that was at the stop sign on Highway 37.

All three passengers in the Alero, Jordan Klich, 15, Dylan Klich, 14, and Kristian Kesary, 14, were pronounced dead at the scene. The 14-year-old driver of the Alero was transported to the Mitchell hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries. All four boys were wearing their seatbelts. They were on their way to a movie in Huron as a birthday surprise for Jordan Klich’s birthday, which is this week.
