Letcher

On Tuesday, April 2, the Letcher Fire Department was called to a fire at the Charlie and Christy Zoss farm. The fire proved to be too much for just one department, so the Woonsocket Fire Department was also called onto the scene to help fight the blaze. The fire destroyed a large calving barn, but was contained to just the one building.

The barn was a total loss and has since been cleaned up from the yard. The family also lost a couple cows, calves, and some goats along with some equipment, saddles, and hay in the fire. The family plans to rebuild, as they were using the barn for the current calving season and will need a replacement.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and is still under investigation.

The Letcher Legion Auxillary hosted a Heroes Appreciation supper, Sunday, March 10, at 6 p.m. It was a night to honor the local Fire Department, the EMTs and County Sheriff’s Department. These men and women of our communities give their time to train, and help anytime they are needed. They take time away from their families to be there when we need them, and we need to show them our appreciation every day. This time of the year when the roads are ice and snow packed,  they are there for people when they have an accident. Its these local volunteers of the Fire Department, EMT and Sheriff’s Office that are there to help people out of the ditch, get them medical help and to a medical facility any time of the day or night.  The auxillary ladies provided a potluck supper for the 35 people that attended. After supper, Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml had a short program with several readings and jokes. After the program, a game was played with the team of Aaron Roth and Ed Hoffman representing the fireman beating Sheriff Tom Fridley and Deputy Jason Coenen of the Sheriff’s Department by one point. It was a night of good food, visiting, and a good time.

The Letcher Fire Department poker tournament and fundraiser was held Saturday, Jan. 19. Winners of the tournament are pictured, left to right: Gary Spelbring (third place), Harvey Fouberg (second place) and Pat Smith (first place).

A soup and sandwich meal was served prior to the poker tournament with a free will donation.

There were about 70  people in attendance, 44 of whom were players. The Texas Hold-em style tournament is an annual event for the LFD.
