Michael Hoffman proudly stands next to his completed Little Free Library that he dedicated to the Town of Letcher with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 21. He painted it red because that’s his favorite color.

On Sunday, Oct. 21, Michael Hoffman, an eighth grader at Sanborn Central, had a ribbon cutting and dedication of a Little Free Library that he built for the town of Letcher. He is the son of Nick Diede and Missy Hobaugh.

While visiting his great-great Aunt Cookie (Colleen Sundstrom) in Chestertown, Md., Michael saw a Little Free Library, and he and his mother decided that Letcher, his hometown, could benefit from one.

Letcher’s town library closed a few years ago, so there hasn’t been easy access to books for the small town for a while. Because of this, Michael thought building a Little Free Library would be a great community service and 4-H project. After researching about them online, he, his mom, dad and great-grandpa, Clarence Olson, worked on it together to make it a reality.

Once the building was done, Michael had to register it online for $40 to put it on the world map with the rest of the Little Free Libraries. He received a plaque to put on the front of his little library to make it official.
