It was a very exciting day on July 22 in Woonsocket!  Game Fish & Parks came to present a Fishing Workshop to an eager group of participants. Bringing a trailer filled with around 100 fishing rods, Levi Gebhart from Game Fish & Parks met the 55 youth at the Woonsocket Community Center to start the event. Gebhart shared knowledge on different types of rods, the anatomy of fish and how to identify fish native to South Dakota. Moving on from there, the group learned how to tie three different knots and were able to practice their knot tying.

By 10 a.m., the group moved over to Lake Prior to get their fishing poles and bait. It was quite a sight to see! Especially exciting was the addition of seven residents from the nursing home who were able to come and join. Anglers positioned themselves all around the south side of the lake. Many preferred fishing for the smaller fish closer to shore, while others went after the bigger fish. Success was seen on all levels! A big shoutout to Game Fish & Parks for giving the community this wonderful opportunity.

For this year’s vacation Bible school at Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church, they changed up the schedule a little and decided to have it in session from Sunday through Wednesday, rather than Monday through Thursday, as they have in the past, and according to Kami Moody, one of the lead helpers for the event, the schedule change was a smart move. “We had several kids who couldn’t come to Thursday night because their family was leaving for camping or a vacation weekend, or they were preparing to go somewhere early Friday morning and needed to be at home that night, so the schedule we used this year, ending with the program on Wednesday night, worked much better.”

This year’s theme for the school was “SCUBA – Diving into a friendship with God.” Each day, the kids were fed supper, then they had music, crafts, a game and then a scripture lesson. They also talked about a different animal of the sea each day and incorporated them into the lessons. There were 42 participants each day with eight helpers, and fun was had by all.

Achievement Days is right around the corner on Aug. 8-10! 4-Hers are busy finishing 4-H projects and final Youth-In-Action events.  One of those events included the Fashion Revue Contest held on Tuesday, July 23.

The Fashion Revue Contest is an opportunity for youth to model complete outfits that are either made or selected by the exhibitor. Participants are judged on their interview, personal presentation, modeling, appearance of outfit/garment and responses to judges’ questions.  This year, there were four contestants who kept judge Cindy Larson busy with a total of seven outfits.

Receiving purple ribbons at the Fashion Revue Contest were Ty Burkel (2), Emerson Johnson, Sophie Kelly (2) and Timothy Kelly (2).
