Carol Sherard

Alexandria

Carol Sherard, 76, of Alexandria, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at the Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial was in the Hurley Cemetery at Hurley. Visitation was Tuesday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Carol Joan Sherard was born Oct. 8, 1941, in Sheldon, Iowa, to Dick and Nelvina (Van Steinwick) Veen. She attended Bell Country School near Sheldon, graduated from Sheldon High School in 1956, and attended vocational school in Kansas City.  She was employed at a bank in Sioux Falls. 

While in Sioux Falls, she met Clifford Sherard. They were married on April 3, 1966, at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Hurley for several years before moving to Alexandria. Carol assisted in the Sherard Insurance Agency and worked at the library while living in Alexandria.

Carol is survived by her husband, Clifford, of Alexandria; son, Chad (Stephanie) Sherard of Sioux Falls; daughters, Cheryl Frear of Renton, Wash., and Christie (Bryan) Bakker of Federal Way, Wash.; brothers, Arlen (Norma) Veen of Sioux Falls, and Dennis (Mary) Veen of Littleton, Colo.; sister, Colleen (Rynie) DeGroot of Pella, Iowa; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joan Spader

Howard

Joan Irene Spader, 76, of Howard passed away on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, due to a vehicle accident near Mitchell.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Aug. 17, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard. Burial followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation, Rosary and Scripture services were held Thursday, Aug. 16, at St. Agatha Catholic Church. 

Joan Irene Feldhaus was born June 6, 1942, in Canova to Bernard John and Mary Barbara (Reisch) Feldhaus. Joan was raised in the Howard area, where she attended St. Agatha Catholic School, graduating in 1960.

She married Darrel Spader on Dec. 28, 1960. The couple lived in the Oldham area for a few months before Darrel was called to active duty. They, then, moved to Fort Sill, Okla. until 1962 when they moved back to a farm near Fedora. This is where they raised their children.

Joan started working at the Good Samaritan Center in 1976. She worked numerous departments there, but was mainly involved in Activities. After retiring, they moved into Howard in 2006.

Joan is survived by her husband, Darrel of Howard; children, Sherryl (Mike) Rankin of Woonsocket; Joe (Carla) Spader of Glenwood, Minn., Todd Spader of Howard, Susan (Jeff) Anderson of Bruce, Dana Spader of Madison; siblings, Jerry (Betty) Feldhaus, Marilyn (Jim) Tucek, Marjorie Schoenrock, Irene Colling, Jeanne (Dick) Simpson, Bernard (Lorna) Feldhaus, Phyllis (John) Olson, Dennis (Myra) Feldhaus, Donna (Randy) Page; sister-in-law Elaine Feldhaus; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dick Feldhaus; brothers-in-law, Fred Colling, George Voelker, Jim Tieszen, Ron Schoenrock.

Clara Schmidt

El Dorado Hills, Calif.

Clara Marie Schmidt, 82, of El Dorado Hills, Calif., passed away on June 15, 2018.

A memorial service for Clara was held on Saturday, July 7, at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay, Calif. A service was also held on July 28 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Fairfax, Minn., with Interment immediately following at Fort Ridgely State Cemetery.

Clara Schwemle was born in Forestburg, on June 13, 1936, to Blanche and Carl Schwemle. She attended school in Forestburg. After graduating from Forestburg High School in 1954, Clara attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. 

Clara married Alan Schmidt on Aug. 19, 1956. Throughout her life, Clara was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church, and she held a variety of jobs including church secretary, Census Bureau administrator and bank teller. Most importantly, Clara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with a smile that would light up the room. She was an accomplished seamstress and artist, and especially enjoyed water color painting.

Clara is survived by her husband of 62 years, Pastor Alan; daughters, Debra Dorband (Wayne) and Stephani Long (Ken), six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Phyllis Manke; and brothers, Donald and David Schwemle.
