Quentin Miles

Watertown

Quentin C. “QC” Miles, 96, of Watertown, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at Prairie Lakes Hospice in Watertown.

Funeral Mass was Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Watertown. Visitation was Friday, June 22 at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel with a Scripture Wake Service. Burial was at the St. Boniface Cemetery in Clark with military honors.

Quentin C. Miles, son of Bertha and John Miles, was born Aug. 28, 1921, in rural Turton, S.D. 

In 1942, QC volunteered for service in World War II as an Army Air Corps pilot, where he flew 172 combat missions in China in a Stinson L-5 over a three-year period, and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star, and two Air Medals. His second DFC was pinned on his uniform by General Claire Chennault, Commander of the famed 14th Air Force Flying Tigers.

After the war, Quentin married Lila Remily. 

Over the next four decades, QC established a solid reputation as one of South Dakota’s premier leaders in the field of public education. He taught mathematics, chemistry and coached basketball. He was Superintendent of Schools at Gann Valley, Forestburg, McIntosh, Mellette and Clark. After he “semi-retired,” he continued his educational career at Henry and St. Lawrence Catholic School in Milbank.

His civilian honors include the South Dakota High School Activities Association Distinguished Service Award, South Dakota Coaches Hall of Fame, and a longtime member of the Board of Control of the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

Quentin is survived by his eleven children, James (Kathy) Miles, Pat (Karen) Miles, Mary Miles, John Miles, Mike Miles, Maureen Miles, Terry Miles (Mary Deborah Tornow), Mark (Jane) Miles, Myrna (Jeff) Maxwell, Casey Miles, and Marta (Troy) Huls; two brothers, Norbert/Tip (Alyce) Miles, Jerome (Lou) Miles; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila; sisters May (Al) Engdahl, Dorothy (Milo) Nelson; and brothers Dick (Dorothy) Miles and Don (Ann) Miles.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Prairie Lakes Hospice in Watertown.

Evan Van Ginkel

Rock Valley, Iowa

Evan “Chic” Van Ginkel, 57, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 15, at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with Rev. Mike Molenaar officiating. Burial followed at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, was Thursday, June 14, and a prayer service and time of sharing memories followed the visitation at 8 p.m., at the church.

Evan Dale “Chic” Van Ginkel, son of Everett and Clazina (Fluit) Van Ginkel, was born Feb. 26, 1961, in Sioux Center, Iowa. Chic was a graduate of Rock Valley High School.

On July 25, 1980, he was united in marriage with Debra Kooima, and together the couple raised three children: Aletha, Trista, and Travis. Chic loved working as a machinist, and in 2005, he and two partners founded Midwest Pro Manufacturing. On July 21, 2009, Chic was involved in an accident at work, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). He continued with this battle for the last eight years.

Chic enjoyed life, was a hard worker, and always found ways to keep himself busy. His faith in God was of upmost importance to him, and he loved spending time with family, especially his grandkids. He also loved camping, fishing, hunting, wrestling and horseback riding. Chic was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley.

Chic is survived by his wife of 37 years, Debra; three children, Aletha (Jake) Erpenbach, Trista (Ethan) Blauwet, and Travis (Courtney) Van Ginkel; nine grandchildren; his mother, Clazina Van Ginkel; eight siblings: Howard (Avonne) Van Ginkel, Joyce (David) Sipma, Charlene (Gregory) Sonne, Myron (Joni) Van Ginkel, David (LaRee) Van Ginkel, Eugene (Diane) Van Ginkel, Melinda (Mark) Kelderman, and Paul (Andrea) Van Ginkel; his father and mother-in-law, Jim and Margene Kooima; three sisters-in-law, Laura (Walt) De Vos, Brenda (Brad) De Bruin, and Karla (Chris) Krogmann; brother-in-law, Jim (Kristi) Kooima; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Everett Van Ginkel, and nephew, Luke Kelderman.

Glen Northrup

Mitchell

Glen A. Northrup, 80, of Mitchell, formerly of Letcher, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, at his home under hospice care.

Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, June 14 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Visitation was Wednesday, June 13 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell with military rites.

Glen was born on Aug. 3, 1937 in Mitchell, to Clarence and Edna (Hutton) Northrup. He attended Letcher High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. 

Glen married Kay Mohr on May 27, 1959, in Howard. Glen worked hard at farming and was recognized twice as S.D. Outstanding Young Farmer. After farming, he worked for Commercial Asphalt for a period of years, where he was known to all as “Cowboy.”

He loved NASCAR, hunting and fishing, and taught many generations the do’s and don’ts of fishing and lure making. Glen enjoyed playing cards and testing his luck at the casino, and especially loved spending time with his family.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Kay, of Mitchell; children, Douglas (Paula) Northrup of Letcher, Lori (Jerry) Van Den Oever of Wessington Springs, Randal (LuLu) Northrup of Woonsocket, and Merle Northrup of Mt. Vernon; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wendel and Galen Northrup; step-mother, Ruth Northrup; and grandson, Andrew Diede.
