Cherry Amick

Woonsocket

Cherry M. Amick, 89, of Woonsocket, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.

Her funeral service was Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Huron. Visitation was Monday, Jan. 29, from 5-7 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Cherry M. Coon was born May 5, 1928, to Jay Coon and Meta (Sass) Coon in the Huron area and attended Huron schools.

She married Roland Amick on Oct. 3, 1951, in Huron.

Cherry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Huron. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crafting and cooking. She worked alongside her husband farming and raising a family.

Cherry is survived by her husband, Roland of Woonsocket; daughters, Suzanne (Greg) Erwin, and Sheryl (Joseph) Turner, both of Woonsocket; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kevin Amick; sisters, Ethel Halbur, Eva Eckmann, Rose Edelen and Pearl Bohning; brothers, Van Coon and Everett Coon; niece, Audrey Peterson; and nephew, Ron Coon.

Penny Weeks

Woonsocket

Penny C. Weeks, 94, of Woonsocket, passed away Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.

At her request, there will be no service arrangements, just a simple memorial at Prairie View at a later date.

Penny (Billie Christensen) Weeks was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Rocky Ford, Colo., to immigrant Danish parents, John and Bessie (Thrane) Christensen. She joined three brothers and one sister in the family home: Earl, Harlan, Web and Ruth.

The family lived in several places and finally settled in Wessington Springs. Billie left home around the age of 17 and traveled, living in different states and abroad in Israel. She liked the Hawaiian Islands.

Billie changed her name in 1969 and was known as Penny Weeks. She married several times and had three children: Joe, Bonnie and John, who were adopted by other families.

In 2004, her daughter Bonnie was reunited with the Christensen families, and she found her mother living in Alaska.

Penny is survived by three granddaughters, Kathy Kegley, Karen Williamson and Kim Woodbeery; six great-grandchildren, six great great-grandchildren, a very special friend and family, Kimi Harvey, and Dale and Abby Harvey, all of Ree Heights; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sister; sons, Joe and John; daughter, Bonnie Breitbach of Circle, Mont.; sister-in-law, Neva Christensen of Aberdeen; and one grandson.

Ruth Berg

Woonsocket

Ruth Berg, 93, of Woonsocket, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Spirit of Faith Church in Woonsocket, with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ruth Orlou Anderson Berg was born Nov. 12, 1924, to Olive (Johnson) and Ludwig Anderson at her grandma Oline Johnson’s farm home, rural Mount Vernon. She had one brother, LaVerne, and a sister, Colleen. Ruth grew up in Denver, Colo.

Ruth married Fred Heider, and they had two children. She and the children moved back to South Dakota in 1947. For a time, she worked at Hendricks grocery store in Woonsocket. A favorite pastime was playing and pitching on Woonsocket’s women’s softball team.

Ruth reacquainted with Vernon Berg, who had purchased a farm near Twin Lakes in 1947 after his military service during World War II. They were married on Dec. 4, 1949, at his sister’s home near Plankinton. They continued to live and work on the farm while raising four children.

After 45 years on the farm, the couple retired to a new home in Woonsocket. They liked to travel and visited all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. They were members of Bethany Lutheran Church, now Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church. Ruth was active in all church activities and especially enjoyed being part of Faith Circle. Vernon passed away in 1998.

Ruth was a homemaker, known for her delicious roast beef dinners with all the trimmings and pecan pie. She had a special talent in decorating, and treasured family and friends by attending special events, sending cards or making phone calls. Special activities for Ruth were shopping with her sister and travels with their husbands.

Ruth had been a resident of Prairie View since October 2012.

She is survived by her four children: Mark Berg of Sioux Falls, Joyce Brown of Blackhawk, Janis (Thomas) Weatherford of Ladora, Iowa, and Vicki (Richard) Linke of Woonsocket; a sister, Colleen Swenson of Woonsocket; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; brother, LaVerne Anderson and his wife, Shirley; and brother-in-law, Donald Swenson.

The family requests memorials be given in memory of Ruth to Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church, Building Fund, PO Box 535, Woonsocket, SD 57385.

Arrangements were with Basham Funeral Service in Woonsocket.
